FOREWORD
by
HIS GRACE
THE DUKE OF RICHMOND AND GORDON
"Split Seconds" is certainly a marvellous title for this book, for if anyone knows the true meaning of the metaphor that person is, without doubt, Raymond Mays, master of sprint work and second splitting.
As a near contemporary of his I have seen very many of the exploits he des-cribes, but will confess that before reading his story I had never really appreciated the full extent of that energy and devotion to the sport, which, thank heavens, he yet retains.
At a time when motor-racing in shy England is at last, after half a century, taking its place as a great national sport, it is very fitting that one of our greatest exponents should relate his experiences.
These fascinating pages are full of learning for the new generation, as well as nostalgia for the not so young.
