The Citroen Company influenced the Maserati models and a new engine was developed for the Citroen SM. However, by 1975 the plan was to put Maserati into liquidation. Fortunately rescue came in the shape of de Tomaso who put the company back on its feet. The 1970s models built on the success of the Indy in the late 1960s. The Bora, Kyalami and later Quattroporte were V8-powered. The V6 was put to good use in the Merak and the Bora had the distinction of being the company's first road-going, mid-engined car.
