Production years covered 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 (Wagon and Utility models to 2007).

Introduction to the Holden Commodore

The Holden Commodore is available in four door sedan, station wagon and utility body styles. Six cylinder VT to VY models are fitted with the 3.8L Ecotec engine. Six cylinder VZ models have the new 3.6L Alloytec engine. The 5.0L OHV V8 engine was fitted to Series I VT's. With the release of the Series II VT, the 5.7L Generation III engine was adopted and this was used until the release of VZ Series II, when the 6.0L Generation IV engine was released.

All years use conventional front-engine, rear wheel drive configurations. All models have multi-port fuel injection. A supercharger is available as an option on V6 models. Power from the engine passes through one of four types of transmissions, a five-speed manual transmission, six-speed manual transmission, a four-speed electronic automatic or a five-speed electronic automatic transmission to the rear differential.

The individually-sprung rear wheels are driven by two driveaxles from the solid-mounted final-drive unit. The independent front suspension features MacPherson struts and power assisted rack and pinion steering. Disc brakes are used on all four wheels and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is available on some models.
