Introduction to the Ford Transit Diesel
The latest Ford Transit range of models was introduced in February 1986, and is the third generation of this popular range of vehicles. This manual covers the 2.5 litre Diesel engine models. The most obvious and distinctive features of the new range is the wedge-front styling, adopted to improve the aerodynamics. The 2.5 litre direct-injection Diesel engine is an overhead valve, water-cooled design with cast-iron cylinder head and cylinder block. Normally-aspirated and turbocharged versions are available. The engine is mounted in-line and, depending on model, is coupled to a four-speed, four-speed plus overdrive, or five-speed manual transmission, or a four-speed automatic transmission.
The steering and suspension on the short-wheelbase (LCX) models is new, being rack-and-pinion type with MacPherson strut independent front suspension. The long-wheelbase (LCY) models up to the 1992 model year continue with the worm-and-nut steering gear, and beam 1986 model Transit 100L long-wheelbase 1995 model Transit 80 short-wheelbase axle with leaf springs as used on earlier models. From 1992 onwards, all models are with rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension.
Telescopic double-acting shock absorbers are fitted to the front and rear suspension on all models. Drive to the rear wheels is by a two- or three-piece propeller shaft to the rear axle, which is suspended by single or multiple leaf springs on each side. All models are fitted with dual-circuit servo-assisted brakes, with discs at the front and self-adjusting drum brakes at the rear. Seemingly innumerable variations of body types and styles of Transit are available, from the Pick-up to the Caravanette. All body styles and variants are mounted on a long- or short-wheelbase chassis as necessary.
