A personal photographic record of motor racing in the 1950s and 1960s

  • Featuring well over 300 photographs of the early postwar motor racing scene, from the late 1940s, through the '50s and on into the '60s.
  • Drivers include the first nine Formula One World Champions, Farina, Fangio, Ascari, Hawthorn, Brabham, Phil and Graham Hill, Clark and Surtees together with many of their contemporaries such as Moss, Gonzalez, Villoresi, Taruffi, Trintignant, Behra, Schell, Collins, Parnell, Gerard and Salvadori.
  • Amongst the Grand Prix cars represented are Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Maserati, Mercedes Benz, Gordini, Vanwall, Connaught, BRM, Cooper, Lotus and Brabham with sports cars including Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lister, Lagonda and Porsche competing at Goodwood, Silverstone, Crystal Palace, Brands Hatch and Le Mans.
  • Further competition coverage takes in an RAC Rally, the motorcycle Ulster TT, World Water Speed Records with Donald Campbell, truck racing at Donington and the Mobil Economy Runs.

From the time he first had a camera while still at school, it seemed inevitable that Keith Duerden would go on to a career in photography. Motor racing was just one of many subjects which caught his attention during this formative stage. As his career developed these early photographs, having served their purpose, were put on one side and forgotten for some fifty years. After a busy life as a professional photographer and prompted by friends and colleagues, retirement provided an opportunity to explore these long hidden away photographs.

Robert Barker has been interested in motor sport for over half a century. His early experiences at Goodwood led to his 'Record of Motor Racing at Goodwood' which chronicles the history of the circuit. The research for that opus as well as his wider archive of motor racing history have been major contributions in the preparation of this book, a collaboration which came about from a chance meeting.
