AUTHOR'S FOREWORD TO THE NEW EDITION
THIS book, written in the autumn of 1935, was an attempt to keep alive for ourselves and our friends, the memories of my cousin Bira's first year as a racing motorist under my management, although a full season did not come until the year following.
The book was intended to be given as presents to friends, but a few copies of the small, privately-published edition were also sold to the public.
I have now agreed somewhat reluctantly to the request of Messrs. G. T. Foulis to re-issue the book again ten years after it was first written. I hope readers of my more recent books may be kind enough to remember that I was ten years younger when I wrote Wheels at Speed and that my knowledge then of motor racing was limited to one season of a complete beginner.
I cannot now accept full responsibility for any views then expressed. But if this new edition serves to give motor-racing enthusiasts the picture of a beginner groping in the dark in his first year, then I shall be more than satisfied.
My very old friend, Henry Maxwell, kindly wrote a foreword to the original edition which was intended primarily for my own personal circle of friends. Having now given that explanation, I have decided to retain the foreword with renewed thanks to Henry.
