Description
By: Bob Gates .
After missing the show in his first shoestring attempt at Indianapolis, Vukovich came within an amazing eight laps of winning the following year as a rookie.
He then triumphed the next two years straight - 1953 and 1954 - making his Frank Kurtis-built Fuel Injection Special one of the single most famous cars in Indy history.
But he perished in a still-mysterious accident while leading in 1955 with a solid shot at winning an unprecedented three years in a row.
In the decades since, as the Indycar landscape dramatically changed, his namesake son and grandson both established racing careers of their own, with mixed and ultimately tragic results.
