Description

Author: Matthew Vale, ISBN: 9781847973238, 192 pages, Hardback, Published in 2012

Triumph introduced their pre-unit, twin-cylinder range of bikes before World War Two, and they remained in production until 1964. The bikes were the first successful vertical twin design, which gave all the advantages of a single cylinder and none of the disadvantages associated with multiple cylinders. The bikes were light and slim, and had excellent performance. T'riumph's rivals rushed to bring their own twins onto the market, but none managed to better Triumph's combination of performance and style.

Triumph Pre-Unit Twins looks at the history and development of these bikes, and describes the various models that made up the range. It gives a detailed technical analysis of each model. Interviews with past and present owners give riding impressions of the bikes both today and back in the 1960s. In addition to examining the model range, the book looks at the bikes and riders in competition, and covers specialist topics of interest, such as custom
conversions and hybrids, police and military Triumphs, and the pre-unit twins' rivals on the market.

Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, this is a complete and readable resource for all pre-unit Triumph owners, and the perfect companion for anyone considering acquiring one of these iconic British bikes.

About The Author:

Matthew Vale started his motorcycling career in 1974 at the age of sixteen with a NSU Quickly moped. He continued riding for a further ten years, culminating with the ownership of a Triumph T140 Bonneville. Between the mid 1980s and the late 1990s his career and family commitments kept him from biking, but the bug never really went away. He bought his first restoration project, a 1970 Triumph Bonneville, in 1998, and started writing books and articles about classic bikes in the early part of the new millennium. This is his sixth book for Crowood: he is also the author of BSA Unit Construction Ruins, BSA Unit Singles, Triumph Twenty-one to Daytona, Triumph 650cc and 750cc Ruins and Norton Commando - the complete story.
