There are automobile enthusiasts and I then there are VW enthusiasts. Many people think they are one and the same, but the VW fan is dedicated, focused and committed to the cars that fuel their passion — the classic Volkswagens that first saw the light of day in the late 1940s and grew into a worldwide phenomenon.
The VW Beetle created history by becoming the biggest-selling automobile in the world, purchased in its millions because of its simplicity and reliability. From the same manufacturer came a further range of very different vehicles, from 23-window Buses, to elegant coupes styled by Karmann. They all shared the common DNA of the Beetle and the same uncomplicated philosophy — they provided transport, but were somehow greater than the sum of their parts. Call it character.
Over the years, Volkswagens have been modified, customized, personalized, cut and lowered, cut and narrowed, made smaller, larger and faster. Much faster. They have been blasted down drag strips and driven across deserts, painted every colour of the rainbow and chromed and customized to within an inch of their lives. They have become integral to the lives of many thousands of people who understand their appeal.
For many years, VolksWorld magazine has established a reputation for keeping its finger on the pulse of the VW scene, recording and commenting on everything that happens and travelling the world to discover new and unique cars and crazy projects. For the first time, some of the best articles and images have been gathered into book form as a one-stop reference for the VW-lover. Within these pages you will find the wild and wacky, the staid and sensible, plus the perfectly restored classic VWs of all ages and persuasions. Happy motoring!
