Description

By: Murray Walker, Philip Porter .

Throughout the English-speaking world, and beyond, one man is an absolute legend in motor racing circles. He is more famous than many of the drivers, and much more loved than most. That man is, of course, Murray Walker.

Murray has probably done more to popularise the modern phenomenon that is Formula One than any other single person. He has been the voice, and often the face, of Grand Prix racing for as long as any of us can remember. Drivers come and go, teams come and go, but Murray remained the one constant.

Though he is world-famous for his involvement in Formula One, Murray enjoyed a highly successful parallel career in business while simultaneously commentating on, and popularising, such sports as motocross, motor cycle racing, rallycross, touring car racing. Formula 3 and Formula Ford. His extraordinary career even embraced commentating on power boats and trucks.

It is all in this book. lavishly illustrated with over 500 images, from photos to cuttings to correspondence to trophies to very personal mementoes. Over 70 people have spoken to author, Philip Porter. about this unique man. They range from mega-stars, like Lewis Hamilton. Sir Stirling Moss, Nigel Mansell, Sir Jackie Stewart, Jenson Button, Chris Amon, Paddy Hopkirk, Derek Bell, Andy Rouse, Geoff Duke, Giacomo Agostini and John Surtees to former colleagues in television who fascinatingly paint a vivid picture of the challenges of broadcasting through the decades.

During his time commentating on Fl, Murray formed two fantastic working relationships, first with charismatic maverick, James Hunt, and more latterly with the brilliant Martin Brundle. Both feature extensively in this book.

Indeed, stars of every one of Murray's sports are widely quoted to give a truly rounded view of the man. There is even a fine collection of that species known as 'Murrayisms', some of which he may even have said!

This very different book celebrates a man who exudes enthusiasm, fun and professionalism, a man who has had a wonderful life which he shares with us in these pages, with all the vibrant passion that you would expect of the unique Murray Walker.
