Description

Author: Lawrence Pomeroy, Hardbound, 176 Pages, b0000cmcay, 1st Edition, 1964 - **Second-Hand book in excellent condition !

Here for the first time is the full and and revealing story of the evolution of the most outstanding of all British post-War production cars—the phenomenally-successful B.M.C. Mini, of which over one million have already been sold.

The conception of one brilliant mind, that of Alec Issigonis, its designer, the Mini is not only a remarkable technical achievement by any standards but has become a social cult and a
motoring legend in its own day.

No one is better qualified to tell The Mini Story than Laurence Pomeroy, well-known for his technical contributions to Motor and for his books on automobile design and practice. A personal friend of the designer, he has been closely associated with the project since its inception and writes from the intimate knowledge of one who was behind the scenes in those eventful days at Longbridge.

Starting with the background to the design and Issigonis' early days in the motor industry, Pomeroy recalls his creation of the Morris Minor and his conviction that front-wheel drive could overcome many of the compromises which had hitherto bedevilled small-car design. The story of how theory was translated into practical accomplishment, and of the vicissitudes and triumphs which were its accompaniment, forms the major part of this  fascinating book

. Later, the many variants, from beach cars to Army utility vehicles, and the high-performance Mini-Coopers, are discussed and, finally, the Mini's extraordinary ascent, after a hesitant start, to class and sometimes overall dominance in races and rallies.

The numerous illustrations, many hitherto unpublished, include photographs of the car from mock-up and prototype stage to its triumph in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, detailed cutaway drawings and also a number of sketches reproduced from Alec Issigonis' own sketchbook.
