Description

By: Graham Robson . ( MERCIAN REPRINT )

Each of these three models has its niche in motoring history. All have that indefinable quality-character. Graham Robson believes they were the most exciting modern MGs and that, hitherto, full justice has not been done to them, a view that many MG enthusiasts would uphold. He takes each car in turn, analysing its technical details, design and performance, not overlooking the production and financial problems which arose, and introduces the people involved, for this is a very personal story with the cars themselves taking a major role. In all cases there was much tension involved in the experimental and development work, in the corporate politics concerned, and in the delay of engine and other component supply.

The reader senses the relief which followed the Twin-Cam finally going on sale, but although production peaked within a year it was soon cut back again and the car was dropped within two years. Despite this, MG fans throughout the world have never allowed it to become a forgotten car.

MGC and MGB GT V8 models receive the same detailed study, and the full story of the rise and fall of the fastest-ever MG makes a grand climax to the book. To set these cars and in their proper place, they are compared with the Downton-modified MGCs built after that car's demise, and the `private-enterprise' Costello V8 which some think inspired the MGB GT V8 itself.

Owners will find the chapters on maintaining these models particularly useful, as Mr Robson shows how parts no longer available can be replaced in one way or another without drastic expense.

As there will probably be no more Mighty MGs (unless a motoring miracle takes place), here is a book that will help to preserve the best of the past, as well as detailing the history of models which are already collectors' pieces the world over.
