FOREWORD.
In arranging the plan of this handbook on the art of driving a car the writer has been largely guided by correspondence on motoring matters received during a number of years from readers of The Times, and generally containing requests for information on certain definite points about driving in its relation to car maintenance.
It may be pointed out that the writer is in a peculiar position to appreciate the general difficulties of the average motorist, not only from the inquiries which he receives but also because he seldom tests less than eighty different models of cars during the year—in addition to a number of commercial vehicles—and is therefore able to take a wide view of the art of driving.
The object of the handbook is to bring out in the simplest way all the finer points of driving, an appreciation of which is known from experience to add considerably to an owner's joy on the road and also to reduce his expenditure in running his car.
It is hoped that by the publication of" Cars of To-day," the latest edition of which contains about ioo complete car reviews, and of this revised and enlarged edition of "The Art of Driving," the motorist will find assistance of value to guide him both in the selection and in the handling of a car.
