Workshop Practice Series Number 8

Model engineers, D.I.Y. enthusiasts and other amateur home craftsmen are, from time to time, called upon to work with sheet metal. It is at such people that this book has been aimed. During its preparation I have tried to bear in mind that in this situation working conditions may be less than ideal with limited funds and equipment. Readers may well be people to whom metalworking is a fresh subject, so processes are described with the newcomer in mind but with the hope that more experienced workers may find in them something of value.

In spite of my comments above it is not uncommon to find quite well-equipped home workshops. Also many local authorities now run evening classes in model engineering and metalworking subjects. These give the amateur worker access to much more sophisticated equipment than he, or she, is likely to have at home.

For these reasons, more advanced equipment and processes have not been ignored if they may be of use in the normal run of 'home-type' work.
Where dimensions have been quoted, the metric system has been used because this is becoming increasingly common. However, the Imperial system is preferred by many, and is likely to be with us for a long time yet, so equivalent measurements have been given in brackets after the metric ones whenever relevant.

Any opinions expressed are sincerely held in the light of my experience as a teacher of craft subjects* and as a home workshop and model railway enthusiast.
I hope that the information contained in this book will be of help and assistance to as many people as possible Home metalcraft is a fascinating and absorbing hobby.
