About The Author
Nick Swager has been building motorsport engines for more than thirty years — more than half of this time in the USA. Amongst others, he has worked on drag racing and endurance engines, and built motors for Oval Racing, WRC and the Mille Millia. He is now based in Britain with his family, and is a World-Wide representative for a high-speed diesel manufacturer. He has served a City and Guilds apprenticeship and has a BA in English.
Introduction
The purpose of writing this book has been to bring together information that may be useful to people who want to improve the performance of their engines. For some makes of engine a reasonable body of facts-and-figures is in the public domain and yet for others, it is patchy or non-existent. It is hoped that this book's data adds to
that which is already available, and also is of use to vehicle owners who have little printed guidance. The book is not engine specific. It deals with some of the engineering problems that may be encountered when building any high performance 4-stroke engine. It tries to explain from a hands-on perspective what to look for and why, and then suggests the best course of action.
To help illustrate specific problems, a few anecdotes have been included. The material has been organised to explain how to strip and inspect, repair and modify, and build and test a performance engine.
