From its origin in Chicago, Route 66 wandered west on two lanes of concrete and asphalt through Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, all the way to Los Angeles, California. Somehow, this cross-country stretch of road rose above its simple utilitarian destiny to become a cultural icon with a personality all its own. A road filled with promise, dreams of what lies ahead and what's been left behind, 66 was Main Street, U.S.A., for all who traveled it. Though much of it has been abandoned or allowed to crumble into disrepair, portions of the old highway still exist and thrive, thanks to a renewed nostalgia and fascination with motoring history.
Route 66 Remembered is a memorable trip back to the way a cross-country trip used to be. With more than 125 color and 75 black-and-white photographs, postcards, advertisements, and posters, Michael Karl Witzel transports us to a time when uniformed station attendants wiped windows and a checked the oil, diners served real food, and brightly colored neon signs promised rest, relaxation, and entertainment.
Whether you're a veteran traveler along Route 66, or simply have a love of the open road, Route 66 Remembered promises to take you on a colorful and memorable ride.
