The Porsche Boxster was conceived at a time when the company's fortunes were at a low ebb, but it has gone on to be a huge sales success, doing much to secure the future of the famed German manufacturer and becoming one of the most sought-after sports cars in the world.
Designed as an entry-level 'real' Porsche, the Boxster marked a return to the mid-engine layout used in the VW- Porsche 914 of the early 1970s; but the styling and engineering of the Boxster made it a very much better car than that. Built for Porsche in Finland by Valmet, the new car tapped surely into the big new market for medium-priced sports cars, where it shared the stage with the likes of the BMW Z3 and the Audi TT. But throughout its production life, the beautifully styled two-seater has kept pace with its rivals and has proved one of the most popular Porsches there has ever been.
The Boxster blends that special Porsche driving experience of supreme handling, steering and roadholding with tremendous power, acceleration and braking. Add in the soundtrack from the six-cylinder boxer engine and you have the joyous motoring experience that you would expect from a company with such a fine and illustrious racing heritage.
Gavin Farmer has carefully charted the history of the Boxster from its origins as a concept car through to its production and subsequent maturity. Full details are also provided by the key people who created the car, and the book places the Boxster in the context of the marketplace and how it compares with its peers. Porsche Boxster — The Complete Story is fully illustrated with many fine photographs and excellent technical drawings. No Porsche enthusiast's library should be without this important addition to the literature.
