Introduced in time for the 1982 model year, the new 944 filled the gap between the other two front-engined, water-cooled models in the Porsche catalogue - the 924 and 928.
At first glance, the new Porsche looked similar to the 924, but as it was powered by a 2.5-litre engine that was definitely a pure Porsche unit, it received none of the prejudice aimed at the 2-litre car.
The 944 quickly became the fastest-selling Porsche of all time and, in 1985, a turbocharged model joined the 944 range. A little later, the line-up was augmented by the 16v 944S. Following the demise of the 924S, 1988 saw bigger engines and
more power for the 944.
After a lengthy gestation period, a softtop 944 found its way into Porsche showrooms, and gradually the standard 944 was phased out, eventually leaving only the Turbo and the S2 in coupe and convertible forms.
The full international story of the highly-respected 944, this book follows the development of the model from the drawing board until it was replaced by the new 968 in mid-1991.
