The 356 was the first car to bear the name of the brilliant German automotive designer, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. From 1948 through 1965 the 356 Porsche was constructed in a bewildering number of variations with an equal variety of powerplants. Their high price and rarity have added to the mystery. Misguided enthusiasts often proclaimed them to be hand built masterpieces, no two of which were alike.
The 356 Porsche history is told in this book, Porsche 356 Defined, A Pictorial Guide, with contemporary photography of original and properly restored cars. The text follows the regular progression of mechanical and cosmetic changes from the first cars assembled in Gmund, Austria to the final Stuttgart-built 356Cs. The story that emerges is one of a limited production automobile with a logical evolution. In addition to the year by year changes, helpful color listings and the most accurate chassis number list available are included. Most of the photography in this book was provided by members of the 356 Registry.
