I once met a couple of blokes whose aim in life was to have a drink at every pub in Australia.
In typical Aussie style they hadn't started by notching up pubs in their home town and the surrounding countryside; no, they had headed straight for the Outback. From that first trip on, they had devoted
every holiday break to their quest. When I met them they were on their way to Packsaddle Roadhouse, on their twelfth (according to one of them) or their thirteenth (according to the other) trip, and while they were arguing a fair bit they werealso going strong.
Not, perhaps, memory wise but certainly in spirit.
That's the kind of attitude with which this book was written. Although with a slightly better memory, I hope. But with almost as many beers — always consumed after, not during, the ride. Whew. Glad I remembered to say that...
Australia, as I may have mentioned before, is a great motorcycling country. In order to both make it a bit more manageable and simultaneously inspire those who can't get started, I thought I'd try to put together an alphabetical list of some of the more interesting places my friends and I have found over the years. It's not comprehensive — we could come up with many more —but it's a beginning. Maybe if you make enough additional suggestions I'll do another one: "On the Road Again Again” or "OTRA2"?
