Quite a large proportion of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters in everyday use are ridden by owners who have little understanding of how their machine works. Many are quite content to remain in this state of blissful ignorance, having their machine serviced at regular intervals as and when the need occurs, or repairs carried out when problems necessitate taking the machine off the road. Not everyone has the ability or inclination to look after these matters themselves and it is well that they are aware of their own limitations.
If, however, the correct mental approach is adopted it will often be found that a quite complicated-looking assembly is nothing more than a number of relatively simple basic units bolted together to make up a single compact unit. These individual units are described in ten Chapters of this book accompanied by well over 150 line drawings. Complicated technical terminology has been kept to a minimum and used only where considered necessary, but to help readers even further, a basic glossary of terms is included.
