The last year of the century saw momentous events in motor cycle racing. On the track, dominant five times 500cc champion Mick Doohan was eliminated in an early crash. And the class came to life as his would-be successors fought to take over his mantle.
The racing was closer than for five years or more. Kenny Roberts emerged as a new star, Max Biaggi fought against injury and Alex Criville became the first European 500cc champion since 1982, and the first ever Spaniard to win the sport's premier title.
It was also Valentino Rossi's year, as the darling of Italy swept to 250 class victory. The Superbikes were thriving, as Britain's Carl Fogarty claimed a fourth title in dominant style, cheered on by vast numbers of his compatriots. And the sidecars revived, with a new four stroke formula but the same champion, Briton Steve Webster.
Standard-setting photography and superb reproduction capture the full colour and drama of the year.
