This Gregory's Service and Repair Manual covers the Australian built TP series Mitsubishi Magna introduced during May 1989 in GLX, Executive, SE, Elante and Elite sedan and station wagon models.
The Magna is powered by a four cylinder, 2.6 litre overhead camshaft design engine with electronic ignition and either a carburettor or electronic multi point fuel injection. To reduce engine vibration, two chain driven counter balance shafts are mounted in the cylinder block.
The engine is mounted transversely and drive to the front wheels is transmitted through a five speed manual or four speed, electronically controlled automatic transaxle.
All models are equipped with MacPherson strut type independent front suspension. The rear suspension on sedan models consists of a torsion axle supported by MacPherson struts and located by two trailing arms that are integral with the axle and a Panhard rod. The rear suspension on station wagon models consists of a tubular axle located by two upper and lower control arms and supported by coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers.
Power steering and four wheel disc brakes are standard on all models however, manual steering was optional on some models.
On SE and Elite models, the radio cassette is equipped with a security system that renders it inoperable if the power supply is disconnected. The correct security code must be entered to permit the radio/cassette to function.
This manual includes information on trouble shooting, lubrication and maintenance, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components which are considered to be within the scope of the average, well equipped home mechanic.
Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention underneath the heading for that component. Some jobs, such as automatic transmission overhaul, should be left to an authorised dealer or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered, enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.
