The four years covered by this book saw more MG model changes and introductions than any similar period since the war.
In 1959 the MGA was in production and continued on until 1962 and some 101,000 were manufactured. The Twin Cam was also in production and 2000 of these left Abingdon between 1958 and 1960.
The ZB Magnettes based on the Wolseley 4/44 came to an end in 1958 and was replaced the following year by the MK III Magnette and in 1961 by the MK IV. Fuller coverage of the MK III model can be found in MG cars 1957-1959.
After a gap of six years the MK I Midget appeared as a successor to the "TF" which ceased production in 1955, it shared much in common with the Austin-Healey Sprite.
During the late fifties and early sixties badge engineering in Britain reached its peak and the Austin 1100 was transformed into the MG 1100 in 1962.
The main news of that year however was the dropping of the MGA and introduction of the MGB which is enjoying an exceptional life span for a high volume sports car. As a reminder of its longevity the Car & Driver road test said `BMC launches the 'B' as a counter attack on Sunbeam and Triumph'.
The Sunbeam referred to was the Alpine which has long gone and the Triumph the TR4 which has progressed through many body and name changes upto the TR7. The MGB has gone on to become an old friend.
