The intent of this book is to provide technical information for E-Class owners with the aim of enhancing their ownership experience.
The W124 E-Class is considered by many as one of the finest cars in the world. It has stood the test of time for engineering feats, reliability, durability, and design. As you read the technical chapters in this book, it will become clear why Mercedes-Benz cars stand head and shoulders above all other automotive offerings.
In the following pages, you will find step-by-step instructions on how to care for your car as the factory intended. You will discover enlightened buying tips, fascinating technical information, and a wealth of electrical system information, plus lots more practical descriptions and hard to find 'insider' information. The contents of this book have been distilled from years of shop owner and technician hands-on experiences.
Mercedes-Benz and most accessories and parts sellers specializing in Mercedes cars refer to the E-Class cars covered by this book as the W124 chassis, or simply the 124. Within the 124 classification there are a variety of models referred to by a second set of three digits which pinpoint the chassis design. The complete six-digit code for all the E-Class models and years can be found in the table on page viii. When ordering parts, this information can be extremely helpful.
Mercedes-Benz also uses an internal code for the engines used in its models. One of six engine codes are used to distinguish the powerplants in the W124 E-Class. Engine code information is primarily used internally by Mercedes-Benz, but will be helpful if you have access to MB technical information. The table on page viii includes the chassis numbers and engine applications for E-Class cars.
The Mercedes-Benz owner who has no intention of working on his or her own car will find that owning and reading this book will enable him or her to be better informed and to discuss repairs more intelligently with a professional technician.
The owner intending to do maintenance and repair should have a set of tools including a set of metric wrenches and sockets, screwdrivers, and a torque wrench.
These basic tools will suffice for the majority of the maintenance and repair procedures described in this book. However, for some of the repairs described in this book, Mercedes technicians use special tools. The text will note when a repair requires these special tools and, where possible, will recommend practical alternatives.
Mercedes-Benz offers extensive warranties, especially on components of the fuel delivery and emissions control systems. Therefore, before deciding to repair a Mercedes that may still be covered by any warranties issued by
