Aimed at a younger market, this small Mercedes was designed over a long period of time and is an addition to the range, rather than replacing anything else. Smaller and lighter than any previous cars, comfort is retained by use of strut front and a complex five-link rear suspension and ABS. A Cosworth 16v was launched in 1985 with upgraded suspension and traction control. The engines were given more power over the years with production ceasing in 1993, although they were continued to be built in South Africa for the local market.
