The 4x4 market changed in the 1960s from utility to an increased leisure market. In the 1970s the CJ range was turned over - mainly to the recreational sector - and the CJ-7 was designed with more room, simpler transmission and an automatic gearbox.
The CJ-5 took on some of these extra features and until 1983 the two models were developed very much in parallel.
Special package versions were issued to please buyers. The Wrangler took over from the CJ in 1986.
This is a book of road and comparison tests, specification and technical data, new model introductions, off-road reports.
Models covered include:
4, 6 & 8-cylinders, Renegade, Golden Eagle, Diesel, Limited, Overlander.
