The XK120 was drawn up hurriedly during 1948 when it became apparent that the new twin-overhead-camshaft engine would form the ideal basis for a high-performance two-seater sports car.
The XK120 developed into an XK140 in 1954 and into the XK150 in 1957, each more potent and refined than the last. They were abandoned for the E-Type in 1961 by which time over 30,000 had been made.
