Although the XJ40 was the fourth generation XJ6, it was only the second design to bear the name because the original 1968 car had been progressively updated until it was time for the new model in the mid-1980s.
Because of the success of the earlier cars the XJ40 was in some ways an anti-climax when it appeared. Not as attractive as its predecessors the XJR versions, with enlarged engines, kept the company going between its severance from British Leyland and its takeover by Ford.
This is a book of contemporary road tests, new model introductions, specification and technical data, long-term reports, tuning, driver's impressions.
Models covered include:
2.9, 3.6, Sovereign 3.6, 3.6AT, 4.0, Arden, Turbo Technic's V12, 3.2, 3.2S, 3.2 Sportpack, Chasseur.
