Introduction
This Gregory's Service and Repair manual covers the Australian designed and built VP Holden Commodore, Berlina, Calais, Utility and VQ Statesman Series 2 models and the VP Toyota Lexcen CSi, VXi and Newport models, which are equipped with a V6 engine. The engine features multi-point fuel injection, direct fire ignition system, overhead valves with cross flow, cast iron cylinder heads, pushrods with hydraulic valve lifters and a cast iron cylinder block. Models in the range are equipped with either a five speed manual transmission or a four speed automatic transmission featuring overdrive and a lock up torque converter. All models are equipped with power steering and vacuum assisted four wheel disc brakes. The handbrake is operated by small drum brake assemblies, incorporated within the rear disc brakes. Limited slip differentials are fitted to some models.
Front suspension is fully independent with MacPherson struts and a stabiliser bar. Rear suspension is either a conventional live rear axle or a fully independent system. Both systems use coil springs, shock absorbers and incorporate a stabiliser bar. This manual includes information on trouble shooting, lubrication and maintenance, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components that are considered to be within the scope of the average, well equipped home mechanic. Certain repair operations covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention beneath the heading for that component. Some repairs such as automatic transmission overhaul, should be left to an authorised dealer or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.
Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate section (or other sections that may be referred to) in the manual.
