Introduction
This Gregory's service and repair manual covers the Australian designed and built VN Holden Commodore and Calais and the Toydta Lexcen equipped with a V6 engine. The Commodore models available are Executive, Berlina and S Sedans and Station Wagons. The Calais is available in Sedan only. It should be noted that the early New Zealand Executive model is similar to the Australian Berlina and the early model New Zealand Berlina is similar to the Australian Executive. The Lexcen models available are Lexcen (base) and GL Sedans and Station Wagons and GLX Sedans. The 3.8 litre V6 engine, which is based on a Buick V6 engine, features multi-point electronic fuel injection and a computer controlled ignition system that does not require a distributor. A counter rotating balance shaft is installed in the cylinder block to reduce engine vibration.
The Commodore Executive, S, Berlina and Calais models are equipped with either a four speed automatic transmission with lock up torque converter or a five speed manual transmission. All Lexcen models are available only with the four speed automatic transmission with lock up torque converter. All models are equipped with four wheel disc brakes and variable ratio, rack and pinion power steering, however manual steering was available as an option on some fleet models. A limited slip differential is an option on all models.
This manual includes information on; trouble shooting, lubrication and maintenance, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components which are considered to be within the scope of the average, well equipped home mechanic. Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention underneath the heading for that component. Some jobs such as automatic transmission overhaul, should be left to an authorised dealer or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered, enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.
Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate section (or other sections which may be referred to) in the manual.
