Introduction
This Gregory's Service and Repair Manual covers the Australian built JE Camira introduced in May 1987.
The Camira range is available as a four door Sedan or five door Station Wagon. There are five levels of equipment, the models being SL, SLX, SLi (Sedan only), Executive and SLE. The 2.0 litre multi-point fuel injected engine is common to all the models and there is a choice of a five speed manual transaxle or three speed automatic transaxle with a lock-up torque converter. The engine is completely self tuning, with no maintenance adjustments required to the fuel or ignition systems. Routine spark plug replacement, checking of high tension leads and filter renewal are all that are required. Valve clearances are also self adjusting. Manual rack and pinion steering is standard on SL, SLX and SLi models. Power assisted rack and pinion steering is standard on Executive and SLE models and optional on all others.
The suspension carries over from the JD range, with MacPherson struts at the front and a trailing compound crank axle with coil springs at the rear. Front and rear stabiliser bars are used. The power assisted braking system incorporates discs at the front and drums at the rear. Exterior changes on the JE Camira are relatively minor when compared to the previous model, involving bonnet and grille, headlamp surround, bumper bars, body side mouldings and rear combination lamp on the Sedan.
This manual includes information on trouble shooting, lubrication and maintenance, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components which are considered to be within the scope of the average, well-equipped home mechanic. Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention underneath the heading for that component. Some jobs such as automatic transaxle overhaul, should be left to a Holden dealer or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.
Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate section (or other sections which may be referred to) in the manual.
