Introduction

This Gregory's Service and Repair manual covers the MB model Barina introduced in February 1985 and the ML model Barina introduced in October 1986.

These vehicles, built by the Suzuki Motor Company and fully imported from Japan, are powered by a 1.3 litre, single overhead camshaft four cylinder engine with electronic ignition and a two barrel carburettor. The engine employs a high swirl combustion system featuring an air induction nozzle near the inlet valve of each cylinder which injects air to improve the combustion efficiency. The electronic ignition system consists of a distributor with vacuum and centrifugal advance, an ignition coil, spark plugs and associated wiring.

The engine drives the front wheels through a five speed manual transaxle (standard) or a three speed, computer controlled, automatic transaxle (optional). The automatic transaxle is only available on ML models.

The vacuum servo assisted brake system operates disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The handbrake lever operates the rear brakes through cables which connect the interior lever to the brake shoes. Steering is by a manually operated rack and pinion steering gear. The front suspension consists of MacPherson strut suspension units with a stabiliser bar.

  • The MB model rear suspension consists of a rigid axle with leaf springs, telescopic shock absorbers and a stabiliser bar.
  • The ML model rear suspension consists of a rigid axle with coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers and Panhard rod.

The body is a hatchback style with four doors and a rear opening tailgate providing access to the luggage compartment. The drag coefficient is 0.37. A two door model is available in New Zealand.

This manual includes information on; trouble shooting, lubrication and maintenance, specifications and the removal, installation and overhaul of components which are considered to be within the scope of the average, well-equipped home mechanic. Certain repair jobs covered in this manual require the use of special equipment not normally found in a home tool kit. When such equipment is required, the equipment and its function is brought to the users attention underneath the heading for that component. Some jobs such as automatic transmission overhaul, should be left to a Holden dealer or a specialist who has the extensive knowledge and equipment required. In these cases, the removal and installation procedures are fully covered enabling the unit to be removed for repair or a reconditioned unit to be installed.

Inexperienced operators should not attempt a service or repair operation before completely reading the appropriate section (or other sections which may be referred to) in the manual.
