Two world wars, the Great Depression, and the fickle buying trends of the American public managed to kill off all of the estimated 300 U.S. motorcycle manufacturers that once dotted the country - every one of them - except for Harley Davidson.
In the crucial early years, state-of-the-art engineering and quality construction earned Harley-Davidson a sound reputation, an attraction fortified by stylish design and a strong dealer network.
It proved a winning combination, and by 1918, when many other manufacturers had already vanished, Harley-Davidson was the largest producer of motorcycles in the world.
Features fabulous photographs of models from 1903 to 2002.
