PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
It would seem that this book has helped to fill a small gap in the literature of sport, so that a new and revised edition is now called for.
I have thought fit to change a few of the original pictures, as well as to add thirty-eight new ones, bringing the total up to 241. These, together with certain revisions to the text and an expansion of the chapter "Racing Through the Years" and "Tables of Results," bring the book up to date. Whilst on the subject of the tables, I should perhaps mention that not only do these include the 1950-1952 results, but a great many races omitted from the first edition have now been added, making the tables a more complete reference.
In all this I have received untold help from people all over the world, for which I am most grateful, and I would like to place on record my special appreciation and thanks for the information sent to me by Smith-Hempstone-Oliver, of the Smithsonian Institute, Washington; Charles Lytle, of Cleveland, Ohio; J. C. KorthalsAltes, Holland; J. D. Scheels, Denmark; and to my own countrymen Messrs. J. N. Deacon, J. Greenwood, N. Smith, and A. I. Linden. The most thankless and exacting task of proof reading the "Tables of Results" has been undertaken by that great and knowledgeable enthusiast Cyril Posthumus.
Many people have written to ask me what type of camera and film I use, the answer being that I still stick to my trusty 5 x 4-in. Speed Graphic Camera and Kodak Super XX film, which have served me so well in the past.
GEORGE MONKHOUSE.
