Introduction to the Ford Falcon and Fairlane
The Ford Falcon and Fairlane models covered by this manual were available in four-door sedan, wagon and two-door utility and van body styles. These cars have the conventional front engine/rearwheel drive layout. The engines are all inline six-cylinder with a 4.0 litre Multiport Electronic Fuel Injection (MPEFI). Power from the engine is transferred through an automatic or manual transmission to the differential mounted in the solid rear axle assembly by a tubular driveshaft incorporating universal joints. Axles inside the assembly carry power from the differential to the rear wheels.
Suspension is independent in the front, with upper and lower control arms used to locate the knuckle assembly at each wheel. The solid rear axle on sedan models is located by coil springs, four suspension arms and a Watts link type track bar. On utility, van and wagon models, leaf spring rear suspension is used. Conventional worm-and-roller type steering gear is used. Power assisted steering is standard. The brakes are disc in front and rear, with the rear disk incorporating an integral drum used for the parking brake. Antilock Brake System (ABS) is available as an option for all models.
