Description

Author: John Starkey, Hardbound, 214 Pages, ISBN: 9780970325921, 1st Edition, 2002

"Corvette - Fifty Years of Rolling Thunder" is an appropriate title for a book about Corvettes. Although the Corvette itself started life with a six cylinder engine, it has become synonymous since 1956 with the rumble of the small and big block Chevrolet V8.

In this book can be found the history of the development of the Corvette racers, from its beginnings in 1956 with just 250 horsepower, through the Corvette GTP of 1984 to 1987 with over 1,000 horsepower, to the present day C5-R, which has triumphed in World famous international races, such as the Le Mans and Daytona 24-Hour races.

Included are many interviews with the drivers who raced these exciting, weighty and always fast cars, including John Greenwood, Dick Gulstrand, Jerry Grant and "Fast" Phil Currin, amongst others.

There are over 140 color and black and white photographs within the book, which have been provided by General Motors and numerous well-known photographers, such as Louis Klemantaski, who followed the Corvette's fortunes on the racetrack.

There are several appendices featuring photographs and specifications of the production cars, plus tests of Greenwood's big block Corvette and Chevrolet experimental Corvettes.

Racing Corvettes have progressed from a top speed of 130 mph to 220 mph over the past 50 years. "Corvette - Fifty Years of Rolling Thunder" tells their story.

JOHN STARKEY is a self-confessed racing fanatic, having written ten books on the subject, including Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France; Lola T70. This title is the fourth book published by Gryfon Publishers. John has owned and raced two Ferraris, a "Tour de France" Berlinefta and a Dragebodied 250GT Berlinetta, a Lola T70, a Porsche 935 and ex-IMSA March 846.
