In sales terms too the cars were a success, their good looks, useful performance and willingness to take punishment winning them many friends.

The story begins with the humble but pretty Talbot Ten, based on the Hillman Minx, which became the Sunbeam-Talbot Ten. A 2-litre version was not as exciting as it might sound, having only the Humber Hawk's sidevalve engine under the bonnet.Things started to look up in 1948 with the introduction of the 80 and 90 models, wearing the handsome bodies we all now associate with Sunbeam-Talbots, which also benefited from new overhead-valve versions of the Hillman and Humber engines, but independent front suspension had yet to arrive. This it did in 1950 with the Mark 11 90, and suddenly the cars were transformed in character and performance. From then on the specification was continuously improved through the Mark IIA to the final Mark III, now badged only as a Sunbeam. Alongside the saloon models there was a pretty convertible, and the star of the range was the Sunbeam Alpine, a glamorous yet purposeful sports two-seater.

After outlining the story of the Rootes Group and its acquisition of the Sunbeam and Talbot marques, the author gives a thoroughgoing account of the evolution of the Talbot and Sunbeam-Talbot through to the end of production in 1957. Even their marque name, Sunbeam, is often deleted so that each enthusiast can pander to his particular love, be it the Tiger, the Alpine or even the Rapier. Between these hard covers Richard Langworth succeeds in telling an analytical yet cohesive tale of how all three cars are essentially one. Like a Biblical rendition, one begat another.

Langworth plunges in postwar with the Loewy-designed Sunbeam-Talbots; thosestriking-looking but somewhat sedate saloons and cabriolets, numbered 80 and 90. They begat the 2.3 litre Alpine with the louvres in the bonnet and the garlands on the Monte and Alpine rallies. Their very success made the new Rapier much more sporting than a badge engineered Hillman Minx should have been. The later 'finned' Rapier a became the sporting saloon to beat on race and rally track. The Rapier begat the Alpine, that neat two-seater, more handsome than the MGA or TR3. The Alpine begat the Tiger, the sad and glorious enigma. The Rootes Group then went missing under the Chrysler banner and nothing was ever the same.

Also discussed are the Humbers which wallowed their bulk through numerous competitions, often with remarkable success and the beginning of the Imp story, as it quickly pushed the Rootes Group under. Unquestionably a tribute to a fascinating story TIGER, ALPINE, RAPIER fills in the gaps, expands much of the development story available elsewhere, adds specification data previously undocumented and throws in a wealth of anecdotes from those who took part. Essential reading, original illustration.

The front cover illustration is typical of the Rootes Group's promotional design work of the period. The Alpine remained in production for nine years; the remarkable V8 Tiger for scarcely one third that period, and yet theirs is a fascinating story in British motoring history.

Graham Robson begins this detailed book well before the Alpine I of 1959, with the rise of the Rootes Group and the man who drove it forward — the characterful first Lord Rootes. The Alpine idea began during development of the early "Audax" cars, and drew heavily on the Hillman Husky outline.

Sharing running gear and parts from other Group cars wherever possible, and scrutinised and modified by the Rootes family at every design stage, the Alpine was launched in July 1959. Four more Alpine models continued its success to the Mk V of 1965, just one part of this intriguing history as barely was one model launched before Rootes began tinkering with details for its successor. The story of the 14 month design and production of the Ford V8 engined Tiger is an even more remarkable read. Also included is a look at the realities of Rootes' participation in the demanding endurance races and rallies of the 1960s, as well as the sideline developments like the Harrington special conversions.

The story ends with the fateful sale of Rootes to Chrysler in 1967 which resulted in an almost immediate end to production of these very attractive Alpine and Tiger sports cars. This history is fully illustrated throughout with a wealth of black and white and superb colour photographs and full specifications for each model. With numerous panels detailing the personalities, events and places that determined the Alpine series, this comprehensive and entertaining book is a must for anyone interested in British sports car history.

GRAHAM ROBSON was competitions manager at Standard Triumph and later worked for a period in the Engineering Division at Rootes/Chrysler UK during the 1960s, before becoming an independent motoring writer. Clarke

The Rootes Group was a late starter in the burgeoning British (and export) sports car market. MG had the lion's share of the market with its excellent MGA roadster that had been released in 1955. And there was its larger, more expensive and higher performing sibling, the Austin-Healey.
By the time the Sunbeam Alpine appeared in mid-1959 its two main rivals had reigned virtually unchallenged for most of the decade.

Unlike the MGA and Austin-Healey, both of which were rather basic in their creature comforts and had a stiff hard riding suspension, the Alpine introduced motorists to a degree of refinement previously unavailable from a British sports car. Wind-up windows were a standard fitting, the fully instrumented dashboard was safety padded top and bottom, there was a centre cubby between the bucket seats and the floor was carpeted. Mechanically, the Alpine featured a fully monocoque body construction, an aluminium-alloy 8-port cylinder head and a four-speed manual gearbox with a Laycock-de Normanville overdrive on 3rd and 4th as an option that many buyers specified. The suspension settings, too, were slightly softer than expected, certainly compared with MG, and provided the passengers with a more comfortable ride without compromising the car's handling qualities.

The Alpine really did usher in a major step forward in so many areas of driver/passenger comfort levels in a British sports car.

Within its conservative limits Rootes did progressively upgrade the Alpine in an effort to keep it competitive with the MGB that was introduced in 1962 in particular. Through its career the performance remained remarkably static, only the Series IV (1964-65) failing to nudge the 100 mph mark.

Total production from 1959-68 was just 69,122 units, a figure that was easily eclipsed by MG, for example, over the same time period.

There are dedicated followers of the Sunbeam Alpine who appreciate it for its elegant styling and refinement levels and the old fashioned wind-in-the-hair motoring that was so evocative of that era in British motoring.

Gavin Farmer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/9781855206861__40519.1461130562.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772096231
the-strasbourg-sunbeams-a-history-of-the-1922-grand-prix-sunbeams-1-5-l-racing-engines-1921-25
The Strasbourg Sunbeams A History Of The 1922 Grand Prix Sunbeams & 1.5 L Racing Engines 1921-25

Author: Neville Webb, Hardcover, 206 Pages, ISBN: WEBB206, First Published , 2005 - Very rare book in excellent new condition !

A history of the four Sunbeam Motor Car Company's Racing Cars built for the French Grand Prix at Strasbourg on 15th July 1922.

Their entrenched conventional history following the Grand Prix, over the past 84 years, is analysed and reviewed together with the prevailing conjecture of who drove each of the cars at the Grand Prix. Through the First World War Sunbeam was a vital supplier, of both engines and aircraft, particularly to the Royal Naval Air Service. Consistently Sunbeams were the most powerful British engines available, and they were fitted to the first aircraft to torpedo an enemy ship, the only aircraft to fly at the Battle of Jutland, and the first seaplanes to operate in the heart of Africa. After the War they powered the greatest of British Airships the R.34, the first aircraft to fly the Atlantic east to west, and the first to make the double crossing, and the R.33, the British dirigible with the highest flying hours. As Sunbeam reverted to car manufacture their aero engines were fitted to a succession of land speed record-breaking cars, including the first to exceed 150 mph and the first to exceed 200 mph, ironically, faster than any Sunbeam-powered aircraft.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/2_11407_e__79730.1721177699.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772109493
factory-original-sunbeam-alpine-tiger
Factory-Original Sunbeam Alpine & Tiger

"The Sunbeam Alpine was the Rootes Group’s contender for sports car sales, especially in the USA where comparable models from other British makers were selling to what appeared an inexhaustible market. Rootes introduced their car in 1959, and chose to distinguish it from the competition by making it more refined, with such things as winding windows and a permanently-attached soft top. Pretty styling, quite different from rival models, also helped the Alpine to secure a gratifyingly strong position in the market. Nevertheless, the Alpine was being made at a time when American buyers were hungry for power and performance, and to cater for that end of the sports car market Rootes developed a high-performance derivative that they called the Tiger. This sold alongside the Alpine from 1964, and central to it was an American Ford V8 engine that offered more than twice the brake horsepower of the four-cylinder in the contemporary Alpine. Over the nine years of its production, the Alpine was produced in five major variants, and with a variety of different specifications, as Rootes gradually improved it to meet customer expectations. The Tiger, which of course arrived later, was produced in two major versions, the second one using an even larger and more powerful version of the Ford V8. Both cars went through a multitude of specification changes, and this fact makes it hard for the average owner today to determine what the original specification of any individual car would have been. The purpose of this book is to identify the minutiae of the changes that were made on the assembly lines. Some remain controversial, but Simon Clay’s excellent photographs help to provide the visual clarity that today’s enthusiasts need to achieve an accurate and satisfying restoration."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/2_11653_e__62459.1736810787.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772109665
