There are two forms of illustration: figures and photographs. The figures are numbered in sequence with decimal numbers, according to their position in the Chapter — eg Fig. 6.4 is the fourth drawing\/illustration in Chapter 6. Photographs carry the same number (either individually or in related groups) as the Section or sub-section to which they relate. There is an alphabetical index at the back of the manual as well as a contents list at the front. The equivalent North American Audi 4000 became available in 1980. These models are similar to the 'new' 100 range, but differ from the earlier Audi 80 (UK) and Audi Fox (North America) by incorporating a sloping bonnet, an additional side window behind the rear door, and wrap-around plastic bumpers. The project vehicle had 17000 miles on the speedometer. No special tools were used, although some time and exasperation could have been saved if we had had acess to them, so we have pointed out where special tools are invaluable.   \u003cbr\u003e There are some jobs which cannot be done by the D-I-Y owner because they involve jigs and measuring instruments which are not available outside the VW\/Audi organization. In these cases we have pointed out why the job should not be undertaken.   \u003cbr\u003e The vehicle is a fine piece of engineering which needs looking after if it is to give of its best. With the introduction of the face-lifted A6 Saloon and Estate in June 1994, the mechanical specification was very much the same as the 2.0 litre Audi 100, however the new model featured a new bonnet and grille together with colour-coded bumpers and several additional refinements.
