It was constantly improved during its short life, but time just ran out for the model. It is interesting to note that until the Boxster made its debut, it remained Porsche’s only mid-engined production car, although the company’s racing models had been built with this layout for some years.

The 914 also had a fine competition history – something that is often overlooked or run down because it wasn’t as brilliant as that of the 911’s. But by normal standards, it was indeed a fine history. There were also a large number of specials built on the 914 chassis, and both of these aspects have been covered in detail.

The 914 series has often been cited as the forgotten Porsche, but there is a growing band of enthusiasts who only have eyes for the model. The handling is of course a major factor contributing towards the enjoyment of the type, but a large number of people like the styling, and the fact that for so many years this was the most affordable of all Porsches to own and run.

Now the times have changed and the model has appreciated, not only in value, but in terms of awareness as well. Engineer Singer is unique in having played a part in all 16 of these victories for Porsche, as well as helping out on a few victories for other marques (see chapter: Helping Matra beat us at Le Mans!)

When, as a young engineer, he joined the Porsche company in Stuttgart straight out of university in Munich, he was given the job of cooling the gearboxes on the powerful 917 racers. His first task was successful and Porsche 917s dominated the event in 1971 as well as in 1972, the first year Singer attended the great race. Engineer Singer was then given the task of developing the 911 road car for racing, and in doing so he created what is by far the most successful customer car that Porsche ever produced, the 935, a car which won at Le Mans in 1979. Following this, he designed the bodywork of the 956 and 962 Group C cars which won no fewer than 7 Le Mans titles, engineered the Porsche WSC open sports car which claimed two victories, and finally oversaw the GT1-98 project which achieved Porsche's 16th Le Mans victory in 1998.

Singer takes us behind the scenes at Zuffenhausen and at Weissach and tells many fascinating stories about the 'holy of holies', Porsche's race engineering division. Modem design and a high-quality finish round off this unique season review.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

9783928540568

ISBN 10:

ISBN 13:

9783928540568

Published:

2008

Dimensions:

240x315mm

Pages:

155

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour ill

Barcode:

9783928540568

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b14978b_rs_spyder_back__57273.1339460417.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772087542
porsche-956-962-the-enduring-champions
Porsche 956, 962 - The Enduring Champions

By: Peter Morgan .

This is the story of the most successful racing car of all time. Throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, Porsche struggled to survive, but unshakeable faith in the design of the 356 led to success in both circuit racing and rallying. The majority of rallying successes during the 1950s were largely achieved by privateers, without help from the factory. Ferry Porsche in particular considered it more important to build racing cars for circuit events, while wealthy enthusiasts clearly enjoyed proving the true versatility of these VW-derived cars by using them in international rallying. With the advent of the 911 in 1964, Porsche had produced a car with the potential to win sporting events at all levels, but it took until 1967 for this to be demonstrated. With its superior traction on slippery surfaces the 911 would go on to win the Monte Carlo Rally, and other significant international events, many times, while at the same time taking class honours in the Targa Florio, Le Mans 24 Hours and other great classics. In the 1970s, when it seemed that more sophisticated rivals would bury the 911's rallying career for ever, the car made several comebacks, even winning the Paris-Dakar Raid in the 1980s. The 911's sporting record speaks for itself, and demonstrates that the car designed by Butzi Porsche - work began on the project as early as 1959 - is the finest and most versatile of all sports cars.

Meredith's book is written with affection, appreciation and authority - and criticism where it is due - and will make an invaluable addition to any rallying or Porsche enthusiast's library.

Features

Authoritative and easy-to-read text

Exciting and action-packed photographs from Porsche's archive

Technical discussion of the cars in detail

Wide base that includes discussion of Porsche's competitors

Criticism of the cars form contemporary journalists

Characters and personalities involved with each project are given full credit

The story is complete and includes lesser-known personalities and their efforts in Porsches

Packed with thought-invoking nostalgia

Fully indexed

Will appeal to Porsche enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic

Other Details

Publisher Code:

PORRAST

ISBN 10:

ISBN 13:

9781845841096

Published:

2007

Dimensions:

255x260mm

Pages:

225

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour and b/w ill

Barcode:

9781845841096

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b13436b_porsche_rally_story__61785.1339460417.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772087558
porsche-sport-2005
Porsche Sport 2005

By: Ulrich Upietz .

From 700 hp bi-turbo 911s to standard sportscars from Zuffenhausen, Porsche automobiles competed on race tracks all over the world during the 2005 racing season. The pre-war Goliaths were now consigred to history as engineers used wartime advances in materials technology and engine design to produce lighter and more agile machines. This remarkable new book, published to mark the 917's 40th anniversary, celebrates this motor racing legend by presenting a superb compilation of over 900 photographs, accompanied by detailed narrative.

For years, Porsche had achieved numerous class victories with their 904/906/907/908 and 910 'plastic racers', but all too frequently the Stuttgart engineers watched their fast but ultimately underpowered sports cars only pick up the lower positions in the big league. An ambitious and brilliant engineer with a wealth of experience, Ferdinand Piech, decided to change that and set his sights on victory at Le Mans.

Although the 917 romped away with 14 race wins in its first two seasons (1970 and 1971) in the World Championship for Manufacturers, this domination nearly didn't happen at all. The 917 had one of the shortest gestation periods of any race car: just seven short, frantic months passed between the time of the project's approval and the unveiling of the first model at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1969. This superfast development schedule almost proved to be the car's undoing, but against the odds the 917 recorded its first tentative victory at the Osterreichring in August 1969.

The 1971 season was the last year in which the 917 was eligible for the World Championship, but the 917/10 and 917/30 would claim many more victories in the European Interserie and Can-Am Championships in 1972 and 1973. Capable of producing up to 1500bhp, the 917/30 was untouchable and to this day remains the most powerfill sports racing car ever to compete on a closed circuit.

Glen Smale is a lifelong motoring and motorsport enthusiast whose writing includes magazine features, books and automotive marketing. The direct descendant of Professor Ferdinand Porsche's design studio that was responsible for the first Volkswagen, the Auto Union Grand Prix cars of the 1930s and tanks for the Third Reich, the company produced its first Volkswagen- powered sports cars in 1948.

Porsche competed at Le Mans with the original 356 touring model in 1951 and there followed a succession of purpose-built sports- racing cars that achieved glorious results worldwide. First came a range of very fast four- cylinder 1.5- and 1.6-litre cars that gained class wins in all the major sports car races — the Mille Miglia, Le Mans and the NIOrburgring 1000Kms — as well as an outright win in the 1956 Targa Florio road race in Sicily. Then Porsche developed a range of six- and eight-cylinder competition cars and soon the marque was fighting for dominance against the might of Ferrari.

Anthony Pritchard has followed Porsche racing for more than 50 years. In this comprehensive account, he describes and assesses the Porsche sports-racing cars, narrates the races and tells the full story of the marque's competition history. Special weight is given to the years 1968 to 1971 when Porsche strived for outright victory in Prototype racing. After disappointing defeats at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, the mighty 917 competition sports cars were raced on behalf of the works by John Wyer's Gulf team in 1970 and 1971. Those were tumultuous seasons as Gulf duelled with Ferrari, as well as against other Porsche teams, and the leading 917 drivers, Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert, battled rival teams and each other.

CanAm was also of great importance. The earliest 917 Spyders were no match for the Chevrolet-powered McLarens. But that all changed when Porsche introduced turbocharging and for two glorious years, 1972 and 1973, the Roger Penske 917s, driven by Mark Donohue and George Follmer, were always in control of this super-fast category.

Anthony Pritchard's enthralling book provides a feast of enjoyment for motorsport enthusiasts nostalgic for that heroic era, and for all admirers of Porsche. The heavily illustrated text — which boasts more than 200 historic photographs and 32 pages of colour — is supported with extensive appendices that include details of the drivers, specifications, results and 917 chassis numbers.

Other Details
<div racing cars to its credit, from the 550 to the 917. Its successes on all the world's circuits are legion. None, however, surpasses the exploits of the 956 and 962, considered as one because they differed only in details of wheelbase and engine. To their credit are an amazing six Le Mans victories in succession and three 24-hour wins at Daytona.

Between 1982 and 1986 the 956 won 27 world and driver championship races, to which the 962C added 14 world championship triumphs from 1985 through 1987. In America the 962 cut a swathe through IMSA, winning 48 of its contests. Powered by a turbocharged flat six, the 956/962 had Porsche's first full monocoque structure and was the first car its engineers designed to produce aerodynamic downforce. Raced both by the factory and by private teams, these were turnkey cars: just turn the keyÉand win. Up to 1991, Porsche calculated, 148 962s and 962-like cars had been built. It is thanks to the armada of enthusiastic privateer teams through the years that Porsche has achieved so much success at Le Mans, as there haven't always been official factory team entries. Endurance sports car racing is at the core of Porsche's motorsport heritage, and the experience gained in this tough arena has brought the company numerous victories across a range of classes. For many years cutting-edge design and outstanding technical innovation allowed Porsche's underdog cars to challenge the motorsport establishment, but 1970 saw the Stuttgart manufacturer move up from being a class contender to achieving its first outright Le Mans victory, with the awesome 917. Over the next three decades Porsche proceeded to add a victory at the rate of more than one every two years...

This magnificent book, compiled with Porsche's full collaboration, tells the whole story, race by race, through more than 600 photographs, many of them previously unpublished. Next came the Spa-Francorchamps 1000 km in which Laine-van Lennep improved to fifth overall. He brought the car back to its pit where it was repaired. Van Lennep went back out and was eliminated when a tyre exploded on the Mulsanne straight due to excessive wear caused by the twisted chassis. The 917 was sent back to the factory for repairs. Given the lack of time available before its next race (Norisring) Porsche took chassis 012 from stock. It had been repaired in Stuttgart and all the mechanical components from 021 were grafted onto it and the chassis was renamed 021.

On 28th June it arrived at the Norisring for the Interserie race with a provisional decoration: a white front bonnet and a yellow engine cover. Hans-Dieter Dechent, the Martini boss, then rented 021. He had it painted in the psychedelic mauve and green livery seen on the long-tail 917 (chassis 043) that came second in the 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours. He entered it for van Lennep-Larrousse in the Watkins Glen 6 Hours in the USA and the CanAm event the following day. On 23rd August the Porsche sported a new red and yellow psychedelic livery, the AAW team’s colours, for the Keimola Interserie race in which it scored its first win. On 20th September van Lennep clinched victory no.2 in the Zandvoort Trophy.

In the Paris 1000 km 021 retired with blown valves with van Lennep at the wheel. The 917’s last race for the Martini team was the Kyalami 9 Hours with Siffert and Ahrens. The car had a 5-litre engine for the South African event and it saw the flag in second place. 021 then went back to Porsche where its engine was removed and installed in the 917 01-021 spyder for the AAW team in 1971. The original chassis and bodywork as sold to Manfred Freisinger in 1972. Three years later Joachim Grossmann bought and restored 917-021. He painted it white, detuned the engine and used it as his road car! In 1983, it was sold to American collector Don Marsh. In 1996, he put it back in to its Watkins Glen configuration although the colours and arabesques did not exactly correspond to the original livery. We praise German thoroughness, think of Fangio, Moss and the rotund Neubauer directing things with signal boards. Without a doubt Mercedes pushed things to the maximum possible in motor racing during the years 1954 and 1955, be it technical or with regard to drivers. In the meantime man has landed on the moon and the infamous Nurburgring North Loop has been lapped in 7m 45s. In 1969 though, the ultimate in motor racing has been accomplished by the Porsche Company. "Phew!" exclaimed a mechanic from an American racing team when Porsche's five- car armada was pushed into Daytona's pit lane; "if there is any truth in the saying that Porsche is a small company, in its day Ford should have come with 30 works entries then?" Porsche had one ultimate aim - the "World Championship of Makes". Apparently the question of cost didn't enter the equation. Nine contracted drivers (even twelve at one event) were provided with optimal lap times calculated by computers - to reduce characters, driving styles and ambitions of these people to a common denominator was beyond the capabilities of an electronic device though. The goal was to surround the opponents, steamroll them and beat them with the help of technology belonging to the firm. Porsche won seven out of ten Championship heats, six of them by a "technical knockout". Three times Porsche knocked itself out and before the ravages of time glorify the wins and erases the losses from memory, I would like to unwind the movie of the 1969 endurance races once again - not retouched and with its original soundtrack, just like I experienced everything.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b18987b_world_champions__57434.1385342288.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772093629
porsche-917-archive-and-works-catalogue-1968-1975
Porsche 917 Archive and Works Catalogue 1968 - 1975

Author: Walter Naher (Edition Porsche Museum), 576 Pages, Hardcover, ISBN: 9783768838375, 1st Edition,Published in 2014

The ultimate book about the Porsche 917; documents detailed descriptions of developments and test drives and includes race reports.

This book is a must-have for Porsche 917 enthusiasts

Ferdinand Piëch's preface is the prelude to a book that, unlike any other book written about the Porsche 917, is based on factory documents only. The name Carrera was inspired by the Porsche Carrera models which took their name from the Carrera Panamericana road race. Used in the competitive hobby of slot car racing, these are miniature cars, all scale models, that run along grooves or slots in tracks with a pin or blade extending from the bottom of the car into the slot. The cars are operated using hand-held control sets. In 2006 Carrera held its first Carrera World Championship; this race is now held every other year. The Carrera cars are now available in more than forty countries around the world, and has become the world's leading manufacturer for racetracks and accessories. Road tests examined the 210bhp, 150mph road car’s performance, magazines hailed it as one of the greatest Porsche ‘specials,’ and rumour says that the last front-engined models could have threatened the sales of Porsche’s flagship 911, causing the front engined 968 model to be ‘killed off.’ From its early conceptual phase and the 924 Rallye Turbo of 1979, to the prototype 924 GTR/P that tested at the Paul Ricard Circuit and went on to place sixth at Le Mans in 1980, this book records the model’s evolution to excellence, based on extensive research in Porsche AG’s own archives. It covers the 406 Homologation models, built to qualify for Le Mans, and the 59 very special competition models, as well as the 17 GTR racing models. With race details covering Europe and the USA, from the Sports Car Club of America production D racers, to the GTO and Trans Am class 924 GTRs of the mid-80s, this is the first time that the full history of this rare supercar has been told.

Additional Information

Covers Porsche 924 Turbo Rallye, 1978/79; Porsche 924 Carrera GT/GTS/GTP/GTR, 1979/80/81.

About the Author:

Roy Smith is a retired company director with a lifetime passion for motor sport. The 914/6 has become particularly desirable, and it is hoped that this book will go some way towards explaining the 914’s various merits.

Features

A brand new, much enlarged reworking of Brian Long's highly regarded masterwork, now in colour throughout and completely updated.

THE definitive history of the ‘Cinderella’ Porsche.

The 914 and 914/6 have now become respected and established classics.

Includes expert advice on buying and restoring.

Includes 914 and 914/6 in international racing and rallying.

Produced with the full assistance of Porsche.

Respected automotive historian Brian Long has written nine major books on Porsche models.

Over 230 illustrations, mainly in colour.

Covers all Porsche 914 and 914-6 models.

Extensive appendices packed with useful data.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

9781845840303

ISBN 10:

ISBN 13:

9781845840303

Published:

2006

Dimensions:

207x250mm

Pages:

208

Illustrations:

Soft Bound, Colour and b/w ill

Barcode:

9781845840303

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b2510b_porsche_914_9146__52188.1458347394.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772096073
porsche-718-804-adventure-into-formula-1-during-the-1-5l-era
Porsche 718 + 804 - Adventure into Formula 1 during the 1.5l era

he 1961 season was the first year of the new 1.5 litre regulations in Formula 1. Out of all the German car manufacturers, only one company, Porsche, had both the determination and the possibilitiy to enter this new class. In the beginning, a Porsche Spyder was converted to a monoposto, called a Type 718, and that was relatively successful. But soon Porsche was aiming for more and they built the last purely German-manufactured Formula One car from then up to the present day. The engine, the chassis and the brakes of the 804 were all self-made and thus this car became the last real Silver Arrow. In the end, it was all a bit too much and too expensive for the small sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart, but it was still an exiting part of motor sport history. Wonderful and previously unseen photographs illustrate the memories of those people involved while complete statistics give this book a comprehensive documentation on Porsche's amazing Formula One experiment. This book will surely fill a major gap in everybody's collection of Porsche books.

Technical details:
Authors: Födisch, Thomas / Neßhöver, Jost / Behrndt, Michael / Roßbach, Rainer
Format: 30 x 32 cm
Number of pages: 228
Hardcover
Pictures: 55 colour and 238 black and white images
Text: English and German

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/sol_9901440003a_pic1_1__50780.1460418835.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772096190
