Since its 1987 revival, it's been run rally-style with half-a-dozen special stages a day. Just as it did in the early '50s, half the entry comprises brash American stock cars, today mostly Panamericana specials based on spaceframe chassis and 600bhp NASCAR V8 engines and running gear, lurking beneath period Studebaker, Hudson, Lincoln or Oldsmobile bodywork. Count Aymo Maggi, Franco Mazzotti, Giovanni Canestrini and Renzo Castagneto wanted to stage an event that would challenge cars and drivers to the limit.

The Mille Miglia was certainly a challenge, from the first race held in 1927 on largely unmetalled roads — the cars throwing up clouds of dust as they tore southwards from Brescia to Rome and back again — through to the final race in 1957, when the Marquis Alfonso de Portago crashed 25 miles from the finish, killing himself, his co-driver and 10 spectators. Until that tragic accident, the danger hadn't really been seen as a problem, at least to the contestants and thousands of spectators who cheered along the route. This was a race that made champions of men and heroes of champions.

The succession of great Italian winners — Giuseppe Campari, Tazio Nuvolari, Achille Varzi — was disrupted only once in pre-war days when German driver Rudolf Caracciola scored victory in 1931 with his great white whale of a 7-litre Mercedes-Benz SSKL. The race was banned following a bad accident in 1938, but reinstated in 1940 and held on a closed circuit. By then most of Europe — but not yet Italy — was at war, and that race was a battle between the Italian Alfa Romeos and the German BMWs.

The Mille Miglia was revived to its former glory in 1947 and over the next ten years it attracted a vast entry, sometimes over 500 drivers, from amateurs in family saloons through to the great drivers and marques, including British Aston Martins and Jaguars, and teams from the German Mercedes-Benz and Porsche factories. Ferrari dominated the post-war period, save in 1954 when reigning Grand Prix World Champion Alberto Ascari won for Lancia, and in 1955 when Stirling Moss scored his famous victory in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR.

In this richly detailed book, published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the last race, Anthony Pritchard draws on personal recollections, official records and newspaper coverage to capture the flamboyant spirit of the Mille Miglia. In Italy the competition became a great national spectacle, drawing interest from far beyond sporting circles to become an event of social and economic importance. After exhaustive research of the Mille Miglia Archives, previously unpublished yet invaluable documentation came to light with the historic information they provide. This book tells of the first Mille Miglia's regulations, the analytical description of 1,618 kilometres of the route - a rare description of the Italian roads in 1927 - specifications of the 101 cars entered for the event with photographs of the drivers, the results list and times at which each entrant reached the various controls at Parma, Bologna, Florence, Poggibonsi, San Quirico d'Orcia, Viterbo, Rome, Terni, Spoleto, Ancona, Rimini, Bologna and Treviso. From this journey into the recorded history of the first Mille Miglia, out came the story of just what the event really was like: a giant utopian undertaking, from which the book now attempts to separate legend from reality. By studying documents most of which were previously unknown, a different story emerges of the 1927 Mille Miglia's various stages, what the drivers looked like and all presented as real people. In collaboration with Museo Mille Miglia it is an ambitious project and the first of its kind: its aim is to document all the cars which participated at every edition of the original race between 1927 and 1957. MILLE MIGLIA’S CHASSIS will be developed in a series of 10 volumes: each car featured that took part to the Mille Miglia from 1927 to 1957 is presented with two lists: one about all the Mille Miglia speed races in which it took part, a second one of following events under the Mille Miglia name. To conclude, a third separate list comprehends the categories of the car, the stone from which spring the pages of the book and includes all the races and events in which the car took part all over the world in the years. Moreover, the cars that participated from 1958 to the events in the name of the Mille Miglia appear in another section of the book.

In the first volume of the series there will be 49 cars featured which took part in the original editions of the race, plus another 42 of those participating in events under the Mille Miglia name from 1958 to today.

Publisher: 16 Ton Press

Number of pages: 352

Binding: HBD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/apiegxzc3__55177.1658368371.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772103214
mille-miglia-post-war-winners-2020-calendar
Mille Miglia Post-War Winners 2020 Calendar

25 spectacular photos portraying the post-war overall winners of the great Brescian classic. When the modified muscle cars of the series were seen performing well on the country's finest tracks, fans wanted a model of their own in the driveway. These "pony cars" boasted a new look and style not seen before, and their all-around performance eclipsed anything accomplished by production-based American GT cars up to that point. This softcover edition of The Cars of Trans-Am Racing is unique in that it focuses on the cars used in this legendary series. These vintage Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, Barracudas, Firebirds, Cougars, and Javelins all are extremely popular with collectors and enthusiasts today. Seeing them in their full-competition versions when they were new will bring back many fond memories for those who were fans of this series. In addition, enthusiasts who enjoy these cars today look to the Trans-Am Series cars for styling inspiration and performance hints as part of the growing Pro Touring trend. Many of these historic cars have been restored to race-ready condition. Additional insight and interviews from the original builders and the teams that maintained the cars provide an insider's viewpoint never before seen in print.Pages: 192

Size: 8.5 X 11 (inches)
Format: Paperback
Illustrations: 485 color
Publisher: CarTech
ISBN: 9781613252697
Product Code: CT562

What exactly did the 24 cars that triumphed in the numerous editions of the Mille Miglia between 1927 and 1957 look like?
