Only supercar builders with even more precarious financial positions have ever come close to offering a similar blend of visual and dynamic excitement — products of more mainstream supercar builders such as Ferrari, Porsche and Aston Martin are ordinary by comparison. However, there have been many occasions during the first four decades of Lamborghini's existence when it appeared that the company had breathed its last. Its cars were so exclusive, so exciting and so unattainable, that the sums simply didn't add up. Indeed, it was only thanks to the success (and financial support) of his tractor-building empire that Ferruccio Lamborghini could even think about producing supercars in the first place.

While Lamborghini's V12 two-seaters have always featured jaw-dropping designs, they've frequently been highly innovative too. Although the Miura wasn't the world's first- ever production mid-engined car, it was the first time the configuration had been used for something so astonishingly fast — and so chingly beautiful too. When the Countach superseded the Miura, though, it was hardly a case of more of the same; this was perhaps the most aggressive — and least practical — supercar the world had ever seen.
By the time the Diablo appeared in 1990, the supercar world had moved on. With Lamborghini having relatively small amounts of money to develop the world-beater everybody expected, the car was fabulous but struggled to differentiate itself from some of its rivals — but that raging bull on the nose still counted for a lot. And while the initial Diablo may have appeared to struggle to distance itself from the pack, the model quickly evolved to ensure Lamborghini stole a march. Just when certain rivals thought they'd caught up again, the Murcielago of 2001 moved the goalposts once more. But in an increasingly politically correct world, and with power getting ever cheaper, Lamborghini has had to work harder and harder to stay one step ahead. If anybody is able to leave the rest behind, it's the company from Sant'Agata. Fascinated by the minutiae of motoring history, Richard Dredge is happiest when trawling through his library, unearthing long-forgotten snippets. After introducing the more powerful, more spacious 400GT, Lamborghini startled the automobile world at the Geneva Salon in 1966 by exhibiting the iconic Miura. Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, the Miura was way ahead of its rivals, with mid-mounted transverse V12 engine, styling of impeccable grace by Bertone, and a top speed of 170mph. Eventually, in 1990, the beautiful Diablo replaced the Countach and the marque staggered on until it was acquired by Audi in 1998. With Carrozzeria Touring designing the bodies, Giotto Bizzarrini the engine and Giampaolo Dallara the chassis, the first production car, the 350 GT, was greeted with enthusiasm, turning into out-and-out praise when a 4-litre version of the V12 engine was installed to create the 400 GT.

Ferruccio's ultimate ambition was a 2+2 and this arrived later, in 1966. The market for high-end cars contracted rapidly and, by 1972, Ferruccio saw that he had had the best years and that his core tractor business faced problems. Enzo Ferrari, Adolfo Orsi (of Maserati) and Ferruccio Lamborghini were all born within 20 miles of each other, though Lamborghini was two decades younger than the others. They were all from similar poor backgrounds, but had very different temperaments. Ferrari was haughty, and subject to sudden changes of mood. Orsi was courteous and gentlemanly, but was primarily a business executive. Lamborghini was very much the brash, driven and ambitious self-made millionaire, fond of extravagant gestures. His hobbies included speed water-skiing and performing conjuring tricks for visitors. Restless and energetic, he was always full of plans: build a racetrack, start a racing team, make small sports cars bearing the Lamborghini name… Why not? Ferruccio was born under the star sign of Taurus the bull, so his car names related to fighting bulls. The first Lamborghini car to be given a name was called Miura after Eduardo Miura, a renowned breeder of Spanish fighting bulls he had visited in Seville. Other bullfighting-related names included Islero (a Miura bull which in 1947 killed the bullfighter Manolete), Espada is a sword, Jarama is a Spanish bullfighting region, Urraco, Jalpa and Gallardo are breeds of bull. Marzal was another breeder of fighting bulls. Diablo (devil) and Murciélago were famous 19th century Spanish bulls, and Reventón was a famous 1940s Mexican bull. Faena is the third act of a bullfight, and Urus means aurochs (a Bronze Age bull). Cavaliere (an honorific title in Italy) Ferruccio Lamborghini sold his company in 1974, and after several changes of ownership, it became part of Volkswagen Group’s Audi division.

A comprehensive official monograph that provides a complete history of one of the most renowned brands in the luxury automotive landscape.

This lavishly produced volume features the complete collection of all the models produced by Lamborghini from 1963 to the present day, including special editions, unreleased models, and those that underwent significant evolutions. Valentino Balboni, legendary former Lamborghini test driver, has been famously quoted as saying “Lamborghini is a carmaker that makes engines, the job of the designers was to design the engine cover.” Yet, in its almost six decades long history, the supercar maker has constructed just four different engines: the extraordinary Giotto Bizzarrini-designed V12 that powered Lamborghini’s flagships for the best part of five decades, a promising V8 that almost brought the company to its knees, a V10 that uses many Audi components and has been the mainstay of the marque in the last two decades, and lastly another newer V12, powering the Aventador. However, what has really distinguished Lamborghini, has been a series of models with remarkable, groundbreaking shapes, each one a veritable design revolution. Cars like the Miura, the Espada, the Urraco, the Countach and the Diablo astounded and startled automotive fans just as much by their daring shape, form and aesthetic purity, as by their second-to-none engineering and trendsetting packaging. The book opens with the long period of gestation in which Marcello Gandini – then head of design at Carrozzeria Bertone – defined the futuristic lines of a car that, to many at first sight seemed to have come from another planet thanks to the taut, sharply creased lines of its bodywork and its muscular mechanical specification, with the V12 engine located behind the driver’s shoulders. When it progressed from a concept to a production model (LP 400), the Countach successfully maintained its charisma, becoming one of the most enduring supercars of all. The thorough text draws on the direct testimony of many of the figures who contributed to the creation of the Countach: from Marcello Gandini to Giampaolo Dallara and through to the invaluable insights provided by the daughter of Paolo Stanzani. Just three years later, in 1966, Lamborghini stunned the automotive establishment with its introduction of the stunning Miura, the first mid-engine production car. Rivals at the 1966 Geneva Auto Show could only stare in wonder. Wrapped in a svelte Marcello Gandini-penned body and powered by a 350-horsepower V-12, the Miura instantly made every other sports car look antiquated, including those offered by Lamborghini's Italian rival, Ferrari. It would be two years before Ferrari offered its own mid-engine reply in the form of the 206 Dino GT. For Lamborghini, there was the time before the Miura and the time after the Miura.
