With an imposing four-cylinder engine that promised 120mph performance, the stunning 750cc Honda looked like a dream come true for riders. Honda had proved its technical prowess on the race track, and now it was offering ordinary motorcyclists hardware previously thought to be beyond their reach. The die for the modern superbike was cast, and within a few years sophisticated multi-cylinder two-wheelers had become the norm.

This book charts the birth and evolution of the CB750 and its variants. The highly readable text deals with every facet of the story, from the beginnings of the programme that grew from Honda's desire to build the 'King of Motorcycles', through a remarkable ten years of production, to the present-day classic status of a machine that sent shock waves through the industry. The CB750's racing record is set out, and full technical specifications and production figures are provided. Based on in-depth research, and featuring stunning period and specially commissioned photographs, here is the complete story of the motorcycle that redefined the riding experience.

Mick Duckworth is a professional motorcycling journalist with particular expertise in the area of historic and exceptional machinery. Two little words that together identify not just a motorcycle, but a whole sub-culture of bikers and a fabulous era of motorcycling. To many thousands of devoted fans the Gold Wing has been the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles for over twenty-five years. And that dominance shows no sign of waning.
When the first Wing, the GL 1000, was launched in 1975 the motorcycling world had never seen anything quite like it. Since then the Gold Wing has grown through 1100cc, 1200cc, 1500cc and most recently 1800cc guises and added a mind-boggling assortment of luxury features to remain the world's best appointed tourer. Today the Wing remains virtually unchallenged, as the finest fully-loaded luxury motorcycle.
Here for the first time, Phil West tells the complete Gold Wing story, from the youth of Soichiro Honda and the evolution of the Honda Motor Company all the way through to a complete analysis and review of the latest machine. And for a very good reason. He not only created the most successful motorcycle marque in history, but he did so by rewriting the motorcycle industry 'handbook'. Beginning in 1946 with an auxiliary-engined bicycle, he progressed via the A-type engine (1947) and B-type motorcycle (1948) to the D-type Dream (1949). From then on, Mr Honda's company found it difficult to get things wrong, and its early reputation was built very much on producing high-revving models with class-leading performance, a degree of technical innovation unmatched by other companies and value for money.

At first this meant small-capacity singles and twins including the Super Cub 'step-through' moped (of which over 30 million have so far been built since 1958, and it is still in production!), the CB92 125cc twin and the CB72/77 SuperSport models. But the company soon started production of successful larger bikes, including the CB450 'Black Bomber' and, of course, the world's first modern superbike, the CB750 four, which set the world alight on its launch in 1969 with astounding acceleration and a top speed of 120mph.

Into the 1970s and Honda simply continued to strengthen its grip on the industry with adventurous designs like the legendary GL1000 Gold Wing, with a liquid-cooled flat-four engine and shaft final drive, the best-selling CX500 transverse V-twin and the amazing CBX, with its dohc 1047cc across-the-frame six-cylinder engine.

Much has been written about Honda's general history and its terrific Grand Prix successes with purpose-built machines, but here Mick Walker focuses on the bikes that millions of people bought and rode - excellent machines that deserve their history. Almost automotive in concept and execution, the Gold Wing was also the first Japanese motorcycle designed specifically for the United States market. It had everything: size, luxury, comfort, reliability and every gadget imaginable. Its success in America led to production at a new plant in Marysville, Ohio, and the eventual end of Gold Wing manufacture in Japan. As well as in-depth technical analysis and description of all the various incarnations, including the Valkyrie, this book looks at the Gold Wing as a cultural phenomenon. Every motorcycle company seems to be able to produce a bike which shouts its name and this one screams `Honda'.

Initially built to be competitive in the Suzuka 8-hour race, the huge `flag-waving' event for the motorcycle industry, it was here that the idea of this factory looking, street-endurance race-bike was born. It was imperative that in producing such a bike it didn't bankrupt the company. The first 1,000 sold within Japan, the next 3,000 were all ordered in advance and the price tag was high to keep the riff-raff out. And what did you get for your money? Honda's most enduring sports bike deserves every shred of that adulation, and for good reason: it offers race track performance in a road legal bike, yet it will happily potter through town, is civilised and relatively comfortable. Also, if looked after properly the 'Blade is very reliable and capable of serious mileage.

For simplicity we'll refer to the model as the Fireblade or just 'Blade from this point.

When it was launched back in 1992, the FireBlade caused a sensation. Here was a 900cc sports bike, the size and weight of a 600. Lighter than its litre-bike rivals by at least 30kg, it handled like a 600, too. It could rocket through a standing quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds (making it the fastest production bike at the time), and top 166mph. That was the 124bhp original - the latest FireBlades pack 180bhp and are no heavier.

Better still, the FireBlade has always sold in huge numbers, so if you're looking for a secondhand one, there's plenty of choice. If the bike you're looking at has unexplained crash damage, or no service history, or the documentation doesn't match up, then just walk away and find a better one. And being a Honda, this
is a quality, well engineered machine with few foibles - another reason to buy secondhand.

This book is a straightforward, practical guide to doing just that. It doesn't list all the correct colour combinations for each year, or delve into the minutae of year-by-year changes (though we have provided a brief guide) - there are books and websites that will supply all of this. Hopefully, it will help you avoid the proverbial lemon, because as with any bike, there are some of those about.

In fact, it's worth remembering that not everyone can cope with the FireBlade's manic performance. With a power-to-weight ratio not far short of a Formula 1 car, it can get the unwary into trouble very quickly So when looking at a used FireBlade, checking for crash damage has to be top of your list. You might even think twice about buying a
'Blade at all, if it's your first sports bike — a 600 won't scare you quite so easily and could make more sense.

On the other hand, if you do buy a FireBlade, you will be riding one of the milestone sports bikes — pick a decent one, treat it with respect, and you shouldn't regret it. Incidentally, North American readers may be wondering what this 'FireBlade' business is all about, as the name was never officially used in the USA. There, the bike was known by its more prosiac CBR900RR, CBR1000RR, and so on. The bikes, whether or not badged as FireBlades, are the same.

Thanks are due to Roger Maddever, proud owner of a 60,000-mile 'Blade, to Matt Saunders at V&J Honda, and Nick at V&J Suzuki. These 200bhp-plus racing motorcycles may bear little relation to Honda's first V4, the oval piston NR500 but, along with the VFR road bikes, they prove Honda's long-standing faith in the V4 - and the desire to offer riders an alternative to the ubiquitous transverse inline four. The irony is that Honda first popularized that layout, starting with the CB750 Four, but when other manufacturers followed their lead Honda, almost perversely, decided to change tack. In 1977 Honda's main board determined that rather than be associated with inline fours, they would instead forge a reputation for building V4-powered motorcycles.

This was a decision that was, astonishingly, made almost overnight and with little planning - Honda executives simply told their engineers to build a V4 Grand Prix racer and follow it up with a range of V4 road bikes. With little experience and time for development, those early V4s looked disastrous to outsiders, but here in Honda V4 is the true story - much of it told for the first time. Included is how lessons learned from the early V4s allowed Honda to create legendary motorcycles and led to oval pistons being banned in MotoGP and Fl car racing. Naturally, there is coverage of the road-going V4s, including the RC30 production racer that was practically unbeatable from the moment it appeared.
Away from the racetracks the rescue of Honda's V4 concept by the VFR750F is covered, along with the Pan European ST1100 and 1300s tourers. The story is then brought right up to date with coverage of
the 2014 VFR800 and CTX1300 cruiser, alongside the prospect of riding a MotoGP V4 Honda on the road. Including insights from those who worked in the industry and owned the bikes, Honda V4 - The Complete Four-Stroke Story tells how these charismatic motorcycles came to be built, their strengths and weaknesses, and what makes them uniquely special in a sea of Universal Japanese Motorcycles.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b17861b_honda_v4__08340.1413334042.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772094105
honda-enthusiasts-guide-motorcycles-1959-1985
Honda Enthusiasts Guide - Motorcycles 1959-1985

Author: Doug Mitchel, Softbound, 144 Pages, ISBN: 9781935828853, WP-8853 - 1st Edition, 2013

The Enthusiasts Guide - Honda Motorcycles 1959 to 1985, is designed to aid the non-professional motorcycle collector in sorting through the pros and cons of buying and restoring a particular Honda motorcycle.

For each of those models author Doug Mitchel provides four to six paragraphs describing the bike in general terms including any yearly changes that Honda made to the bike during the time the model was in production. At that time part of the World Championship series, the TT attracted the biggest names in the racing world. It was also the toughest and most challenging event of its kind. In 1959, the first Japanese riders to reach the Island experienced a culture shock when they encountered western lifestyles for the first time, and this was only a few years after the Second World War. Yet they won over young hearts and minds, and helped rebuild bridges. Not only that, Honda machines proved themselves reliable – and fast. They were soon picking up race victory after race victory and the likes of Jim Redman, Luigi Taveri and Mike Hailwood were queueing up to ride them. When they walked away from Grand Prix motorcycle racing in 1967, Honda had won everything there was to win on two wheels at the Isle of Man TT. A legend was born, and the Honda name would go from strength to strength.
