To some extent I found myself frustrated that I did not write down more of what occurred during the 1970s, the heydays of the Torana. At the time I drove XU-1s, SLRs and Hatchbacks but back then they were just cars you drove to get from A to B. Unlike some, I never even took a photograph of a Torana in my care, wish I had though, as do many Holden employees involved in the Design, Development and Manufacture of the model.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eI believe Torana Tough breaks new ground for the level of detail provided, it answers many questions and I believe settles a few myths. In Australia it comes down to about four. Falcon GT, Charger, Torana XU-1 and Monaro. It was no nostalgic moment that Holden made the decision to name the new coupe in 2000 \"Monaro\". The decision was designed to capture that moment in the market's mind when the Monaro was in it's heyday. The fact that Monaro lost it's original design parameters after 1971, become 'soft', perhaps even stodgy and ended up a sedan, counted for nothing. When the new coupe arrived it came with an expectation. It wasn't a ballsey muscle car like the first Monaro GTS 327, but a modern performance coupe. As a reformed boy racer I would have liked to have mern more bolder, unique colours but would be happy for any of the later coupes to sit in my garage, particularly the Coupe 4, which I believe was the pinnacle of the coupe's development, it would have to be Sting Red though.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eMy first, and only Monaro to date came when the '59 Chev I was driving expired. Heather and I both worked at Holden and we noted a number of HG Monaros were being sold from the fleet. Standing in the dusty holding yard, a Yellow Dolly 253 manual stood out and at $2,175 and 4,120 ks on the clock was ours.\u003cbr\u003e We owned the car until 1976 and by the time it was sold it had been somewhat modified. Spoilers, mags, custom paint, flares and HQ door handles. Researching this book has brought back a lot of memories. The unmistakable feel, noise and ride of the mid-70s coupes, the cable clutch, clunk of the door' but best of all the note of a dual exhaust and scream of a Qjet with the secondaries open. I can forget the oversteer.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe first series (HK-HG) Monaro coupe sold 36,221 coupes and the second (HQ-HX) 15,395, spanning 10 years. The third series, over five years saw 57,723 coupes produced. For a specialist model this was an outstanding result not only in the domestic market but also overseas. The 48-215 and FJ were nothing else if not post-war functional, though the FJ's bold chromed grille did manage a bit of jukebox fun. The FE\/FC had some curvature in their flanks, though the designers held back on really going to town on a shape that had a lot of potential to be taken to interesting heights.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe FB\/EK managed to capture some of the spirit of the fabulous middle-fifties in the USA, especially in their windscreen and A-pillar treatment, but yet again the designers were afraid to give it their all. Just look at their shrinking-violet tailfins in an era when big (no, huge!) fins were all the rage in Yank tanks.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eHolden's EJ did go for broke, with some swooping lines in the turret and glass that worked well in the eyes of those who could look to the future. But the poor old EJ copped a heap of criticism for its looks (justifying the Holden designers' complaint that the Aussie public wanted their cars conservative) so was dulled down into the angular lines of the EH (justifying the conservatives within Holden who said the buyers didn't want a car that broke new styling grounds!).\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThen came the HD, like other outputs of bold designer strokes this Holden, too, copped a bagging. It wasn't really a full-on Holden design, rather one that followed a lot of the ideas suggested by Opels of the early sixties. The space age was all the rage at the time so auto designers went for shapes that gave the flying-saucer look, especially in the way they tried to hide the wheels under the guards. How times change, these days it's exactly the opposite in the aura designers are trying to give their machines; big wheels and wide tracks are all the rage today.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eSo, let's take a detailed look at the HD and HR Holdens, examine their strengths and their weaknesses, their hot engines and the everyday units. Yet only the arrival of the Opel-engineered Cavalier in 1975 saved the Vauxhall name and kept the home fires burning, first at Luton and then Ellesmere Port. The Merseyside factory even made Opels for export.
