The banked circuit, opened in June 1907, was one of the great engineering wonders of the Edwardian era. It was soon a magnet for the fastest cars — Napier, Sunbeam, Bentley, the aero-engined monsters — and greatest drivers in the world, as well as hosting major motorcycle and cycle events. Huge crowds came to watch.

Brooklands was also the birthplace of aviation in Britain. An airfield built within the track was where most of the pioneer pilots learned to fly and many early aircraft were built and tested. It later became the hub of private flying too.

In this meticulously researched and gloriously illustrated Official Centenary History, David Venables celebrates every aspect of the famous Surrey landmark. The decades of motorsport endeavour — racing, record-breaking, long- distance events, club rallies and manufacturer testing — are chronicled in fascinating detail, as is the pivotal role Brooklands played in Britain's developing aviation industry. Appendices provide Outer Circuit lap records, winners of long- distance races, types of aircraft built, and maps showing how the site evolved.

The Brooklands history is a rich tapestry of triumph, tragedy, glamour and innovation. In the build-up to the First World War, Vickers and other companies established factories at the track, building many thousands of aircraft flown in action by the Royal Flying Corps and the fledgling Royal Air Force. In 1919 a Vickers Vimy from Brooklands was the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic successfully.

When racing resumed in 1920, the public was thrilled by high-speed duels on the rim of the banking between drivers such as Parry Thomas, Malcolm Campbell and Tim Birkin. Despite problems with noise restrictions and the limitations of the 1907 track design, racing continued unabated in the 1930s. But as Germany began re-arming, aircraft manufacture expanded at Brooklands again, led by Vickers and Hawker.

Two legendary Second World War military aircraft — Hurricane and Wellington — made their first flights at Brooklands. As a result of wartime damage and alteration, the track was no longer suitable for racing, but Brooklands remained a centre of aviation excellence. Many famous civil aircraft, including the Viscount and VC-10, came from the Vickers factory, as well as the Valiant, first of the RAF's V-bomber force. After Vickers became part of the British Aircraft Corporation (later British Aerospace), a major part of Concorde was produced at Brooklands.

Following the closure of the aircraft factories, the site seemed doomed to become a commercial centre and housing estate, but the opening of the Brooklands Museum has preserved part of the historic track and a further boost came with the opening of the 'Mercedes-Benz at Brooklands' centre in 2006.

David Venables, formerly the Official Solicitor, is Assistant Editor of the Vintage Sports Car Club Bulletin and author of respected motor racing histories on Napier, Bugatti and Alfa Romeo.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

H4329

ISBN 10:

ISBN 13:

9781844253296

Published:

2007

Dimensions:

235x285mm

Pages:

288

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, b/w ill

Barcode:

9781844253296

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b13339b_brooklands_books__57494.1339460448.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772088305
daytona-24-hours-the-definitive-history-of-americas-great-endurance-race-2nd-edition
Daytona 24 Hours - The Definitive History of America's Great Endurance Race (2nd Edition)

By: J. In many cases the cars had been designed for long- distance Grand Prix road races or for participation in other important international contests. Some were already of considerable age by the time they made their debut at Brooklands so that antiquity was added to their still considerable ability to run well and quickly, and score, in the faster handicap races at the long-lived Weybridge Motor Course.

Bill Boddy recalls with affection these giants, the engines of which were 10 litres or over (the author's chosen minimum). The early monsters include the Fiat Mephistopheles, before it was given aero-power, the startlingly crude 200hp V8 Darracq, the immense Napier Samson, Malcolm Campbell's Darracq (the first Blue Bird) and the various big Mercedes, many of which were basic in construction, with flimsy chassis and chain final-drive. More sophisticated was the former land speed record holder, the 101/2-litre V12 Delage, which gave John Cobb, the handsome young barrister, Oliver Bertram, and the courageous little Mrs Kay Petre, some of their more notable successes.

There were also the big racing cars from an earlier age, which enlivened Brooklands' afternoons on those Bank Holiday meetings in the 1920s, like the venerable but still effective Lorraine Dietrich Vieux Charles Trois and the Germanic 200hp Benz, one of which went over the top of the banking at the end of a race. There was the lone 1908 Grand Prix Napier and the S61 Fiat from a 1911 French road race that entertained the crowds for year after year, porous cylinder blocks and suspect steering gear notwithstanding.

A number of these great and historic motor cars, with the aura of age, continued to grace events run by the Vintage Sports Car Club and other organisations, long after the war had closed Brooklands. The original Kyalami racing circuit, in particular, evokes nostalgia, as it was here that, as a teenager, I started racing on a shoe-string budget and it was here that I won the SA Grand Prix in 1975. It’s also very strange which incidents remain in one’smind. I still recall jumping out of my Renault 8 and running over towards Percy Trehair, the Champion representative, to check if I had the right mixture and timing, which was of course vital information. I recall Alex Blignaut paying us R34 starting money to come up from East London to race, and then at a subsequent meeting, disqualifying us as the Renault was too low. I just said that I never read the rules, I simply copied Scamp Porter’s works Renault! Later in the season, with a supercharger fitted to the Renault 8, which incidentally qualified faster than the works Ford Capri six months later, I remember taking Barbeque and Jukskei absolutely flat out on the first lap. My right leg was shaking uncontrollably from nerves, so I took my right hand and pressed my leg down in order to keep the accelerator flat on the floorboards. Later, as my right leg steadied, I could keep both hands on the steering wheel, which made it easier to go flat out and a little bit sideways, which earned me the nickname ‘Sideways Scheckter’.

Another flashback was that of going through Sunset Bend at night in one of the Nine Hours and I can still remember how I eased the accelerator with the car on tiptoes. And then there was my first Formula Ford race, spinning six times at Clubhouse in an eight lap race. My mechanic had not set the car up properly and had simply tightened most of the bolts.

The 1975 SA Grand Prix was one of the highlights of my career. I had crashed the Tyrrell Ford in the last official qualifying session, writing the car off and during the Saturday morning session (race day) the engine of my training car blew up. Ken Tyrrell and his mechanics fitted a new Ford Cosworth motor in a record three hours, instead of the usual four, making sure that I was on the grid in time. I took the lead on the second lap and went on to win. The crowd went mad and on the parade lap, in true South African fashion, I even had a few beer cans thrown at me. I assumed at the time that it was an act of hysterical joy and not a personal attack!

Another lasting memory was joining Ferrari for the 1979 season, finishing second behind my team-mate, Gilles Villeneuve, in the SA Grand Prix and going on to clinch the World Championship at Monza, quite appropriately for Ferrari!

These are just some of the memories of one man’s experiences on one of the greatest circuits in motor racing history – KYALAMI as it used to be.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/9780620488266__22432.1494565621.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772098451
nurburgring-history-german-english-text
Nurburgring - History - German / English Text

Authors: Michael Behrndt, Jorg-Thomas Fodisch & Matthias Behrndt, Hardbound, 132 Pages, ISBN: 9783936285024, German/ English Text, First Edition, 2017

There is a good reason that the Nordschleife, with its 73 curves, ups and downs, and the Karussell, is still to this very day the benchmark for automobile durability.

Driving there presents an extreme test of materials and of the driver. Just such an occasion took place with the construction of Thompson Speedway in 1940, a five-eighth mile banked oval track, dubbed “The Indianapolis of the East.” A road course joined to the oval in 1952 enlarged the track to form the first privately-owned complex where sports car drivers could race safely. It transformed the face of sports car racing in America, and hastened the demise of the dangerous open-road events together with the majority of flat and boring airfield race venues. This two-volume set, illustrated with many previously unseen photographs, traces the history of the raceway during its active years and describes the personalities involved in the changing fortunes of the course until its closure in 1977.

Two-volume set with dust jacket and slipcase

240mm x 330mm (portrait format)

760 pages (VOL 1: 352 pages, VOL 2: 408 pages)

1200 images total

Signed and Numbered Edition of 500 copies

ISBN: 9781854432988

Author Biography
Born in Hertfordshire some twenty miles north of London, during the Second World War, Terry O’Neil has lived the majority of his life in the Midlands, England. It's about people. It’s about the pioneers who created Britain's first permanent true road racing circuit...firstly for motor cycles in 1931 and then also for cars from 1933.

It’s about the phenomenal success and dramatic progress that saw the circuit expand from loose-surfaced tracks created for horse-drawn carriages to hosting four pre-war Grands Prix, the first in 1935, the final two the "Silver Arrows" Grands Prix of 1937 and 1938. It's about how the Army took over during the war years and the many attempts that came very close to bringing racing back in the 1960s with innovative, state-of-the-art facilities...and it describes the Tom Wheatcroft era from 1977, son Kevin’s revival of the track in 2010 and the New Vision of MSV's first full season in 2018.

Researched, written and designed by John Bailie, the book includes many new photographs plus documents, maps and diagrams, unique then-and-now images, illustrations by the author, personal anecdotes and memories, together with extracts from on-the-spot race reports by Bill Boddy MBE, founding editor of Motor Sport magazine.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/2_7559_e__09497.1543811991.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772101595
