The Bob Hannah Story

By: Tom Madigan .

Motocross racing began in 1924just outside London, England. It remained a European sport populated with Euro stars and didn't emigrate to the United States until 1957. By 1970, the U.S. had its own national race series, complete with homegrown stars. In the 500cc class, riders like Jimmy Weinert and Brad Lackey captured attention with their youth and speed. In the 125cc class, Marty Smith was the rider to beat.

While Weinert, Lackey, and Smith were making names for themselves on America's motocross tracks, a teenager named Bob Hannah was out in the desert, riding dirt bikes with his dad. When he turned 18, he entered his first race, an amateur event in Southern California. He thrashed everyone so soundly that he was immediately given his Expert license.

In 1976, the as-yet-unknown Hannah was hired by Yamaha as a factory rider. In his first pro event of the year, a 125cc race, he stormed past 21 riders and found himself behind the reigning champion, Marty Smith. One lap later he was ahead of Smith and pulling away. Smith crashed trying to catch Hannah and finished the race a distant second. According to legend, motojournalists recounting the race spoke of the kid who came from nowhere and, like a hurricane, blew past the rider everyone thought invincible. The name stuck, and "Hurricane" Bob Hannah was introduced to motocross fans across the U.S. and, later, around the world.

By the time the Hurricane retired in 1987, he had collected 70 AMA National wins, six AMA National titles, a Motocross des Nations title, and a worldwide legion of devoted fans. Even today, 20 years after his retirement, people line up to get his autograph at motorsports events. Why? Because his unmatched determination and riding skill made him off-road motorcycle racing's first American superstar. He was the bridge between the first U.S. motocross champions and Supercross' first superstars. He is the subject of reverent interviews in motocross magazines. He's still a spokesman for Yamaha, even though he hasn't swung a leg over one of their race bikes for two decades. When he was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999, he was second to none in total wins and consecutive wins.
Today, Bob Hannah is a pilot and owns an aviation business. A precocious talent, he began riding competitively on Vincents in the early 1950s, then REGs and NSUs and Nortons. He swiftly established himself as one of the quickest and most determined competitors. He confirmed his outstanding qualities as a rider when he won his first world 500cc title for MV Agusta in 1956, and this triumph was followed by six more titles, three at 350cc and three at 500cc. From 1958 to 1960, he was rarely beaten and usually he won by a huge margin.

In this fully illustrated and in-depth new study, Mick Walker reassesses Surtees's remarkable record and explores the background to his achievement. He recalls Surtees's early introduction to the sport, his rapid development as a rider and his years of dominance. The technical side of Surtees's career - the bikes he rode and his considerable skills as a mechanic and engineer — is covered in detail. The book gives a fascinating insight into the intense motivation that often gave Surtees the edge over his rivals and laid the foundation for the success that followed.

As a rider Surtees was not only exceptionally fast, safe and consistent, but he was also technically adept and innovative. His race preparation was meticulous and single-minded, and this professional attitude to the sport marked him out from his contemporaries. In many ways Surtees is the precursor of later generations of fiercely dedicated, perfectionist riders like Kenny Roberts Snr and Mick Doohan, and the time is right for a reassessment of his contribution to the sport.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

BR-3462

ISBN 10:

1859833462

ISBN 13:

Published:

2003

Dimensions:

200x265mm

Pages:

224

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, b/w ill

Barcode:

9781859833469

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b8460_john_surtees__62468.1339460305.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772085218
bob-mcintyre-the-flying-scot
Bob McIntyre The Flying Scot

By: Mick Walker .

FOURTH in a series intended to cover the careers of the world's greatest motorcycle racing champions, Bob McIntyre – The Flying Scot tells the story of the man who never actually won a world championship – but certainly deserved to. These rolling sculptures have been covered in motorcycle and even hot rod magazines for decades as Arlen Ness built a worldwide reputation as an innovator and sought-out builder of themed custom bikes.

This book traces the growth of the Arlen Ness reputation, business empire, and custom bike resumé and features stunning new photography of all the bikes in Arlen’s personal collection, over 50 in total.

From humble blue-collar origins, Arlen Ness has risen to the highest ranks of the motorcycle industry. In a world where chopper builders rule television airwaves, Arlen Ness reigns supreme. Arlen didn't rise to this level by merely being one of the first major builders on the scene; he earned his place in the pantheon of customizers by being the most innovative builder to ever set a torch to metal. When other builders were settling for extended forks and mile-high sissy bars, Arlen was using center-hub steering and mounting two engines on his choppers. When other builders were bolting together choppers with off-the-rack parts, Arlen was crafting turbocharged machines with custom-built overhead-cam engines.

Arlen remains one of the most innovative builders in a chopper scene populated by many talented young innovators. Less than a month later, at an obscure road circuit in Estonia, he was killed instantly when he crashed his 125cc Honda into a tree. It was for all practical purposes a state occasion.

But the 'King of the Roads', as he was affectionately known, wasn't simply great because, in a career spanning 31 years, he won almost twice as many TT races as anyone else, or even because he won five consecutive Formula One world titles. He was great because he always won generously, lost graciously, and never stopped being Ireland's favourite son. Ben also suffered a shocking 180-mph crash at Daytona that tested not only his personal courage but the resolve of his family for him to keep racing.

Ben persevered, overcame these challenges, and triumphed. In 2006 he won the first of three straight AMA Super-bike Championships, ending Mladin's title streak. Then in 2009 he stunned the international community, becoming the most successful World Superbike rookie of all time, winning a record number of poles—and the championship—on tracks he'd never seen before, riding for a new manufacturer, Yamaha. The next year Ben was promoted to MotoGP, the pinnacle of motorcycle racing, with Yamaha's satellite team, Tech 3. Fifty years ago, 'super enthusiast' Mick Walker set out on the ride that would change his life. Everyone with an interest in motorcycling's classic era, or where it is going in the future, will find his story a fascinating read. As a rider, racer, and dealer in many of the most desirable bikes of all time, Mick Walker has lived and breathed motorcycles for the past 50 years. Today, he is best known for his books, written with a unique authority as an industry insider. Since 1985, Walker has published over 130 marque histories and rider biographies, drawing upon an expert knowledge that is second to none. However, despite a shoestring budget, his passion and riding skill took him close to the upper echelons of roadracing during the 1960s, when he made personal friends of many of the all-time greats. With memories of his own struggle to get started, Mick would later help to further the career of many rising stars as a team boss and mentor.

Mick went on to found his own highly successful business as a spares supplier, dealer, tuner and importer. During the 1970s and '80s, Mick Walker Motorcycles became the first stop for British riders of Italian bikes, helping to cement the reputation of Ducati, Moto Guzzi, MV, Cagiva and many more. When that business closed, Mick went on to forge his new career as a writer and expert consultant to the motorcycle trade.

This fascinating autobiography draws on a lifetime's experience to bring half a century of classic motorcycling to life. Itching to follow his father's footsteps, he began racing at the age of 16 and has since competed in virtually every form of competition, including both motocross and road racing at international level. He has competed on the American professional motocross scene, at the - infamous Isle of Man TT, and throughout Asia.

Jim reckons he was born at exactly the right time, enabling him to experience the carefree ways of the 'fifties as Australia shook off the colonial image and emerged as a nation in its own right. Somehow, working with words has been a part of Jim's life since he began contributing to school newspapers. This skill has so far led to eleven books, including the highly respected Australia's Motorcycling Heritage, which has had two editions published. It's a collection of memories covering 65 years, full of larger than life characters, travel tales and an entertaining snapshot of Australian life.

Introduction by the Author:

It's a tough call, dredging through one's grey cells for memories long stored; things that seemed important at the time but now are just fuzzy recollections. I suppose this is a challenge facing anyone who sets out to chronicle their existence. This book, with all its fits and starts, took well over a decade to come together, and because there was no blueprint, no architect, it needed to be ruthlessly bashed into shape, whole sections scrapped or substantially revised, on many occasions. A bit like the frog in the well, just when you think you're about there, you slip back. But eventually you must call time, at least on the content, because a sad fact is that most autobiographies are never completed.

I am eternally grateful to the people who helped bring this book to fruition, especially my wife Sue, my sister-in-law Lyn and school chum Ann Sellee who read and re-read the words, correcting spelling mistakes and typos, highlighting glitches and so on. Also to those who supplied the photographs, without which this book would lack a major element. Luckily my father was a keen amateur photographer, and Sue has also become quite proficient behind the lens. In some cases I have acknowledged the source on the caption, but in the majority just who pushed the shutter button I can no longer recall. What makes them tick, how they cope with the challenge Ind what the science is that makes them so dominate in their chosen sport. Hugh knderson is one who can. From humble origins as a lonely boy on the family farm in New Zealand to the heights of world domination, he explains in his own words he motivation, race strategies, psychology of winning, heartache and triumph hat helped him deliver Suzuki its first major Grand Prix successes in the 1960's.

This was a golden age, when Japanese and European factories battled for supremacy on the world's most dangerous circuits.
