Not only were titanic battles raging between the four leading teams – McLaren, Williams, Ferrari and Lotus – in the second phase of the mega-powerful turbo era, rivalry between the top Formula 1 drivers, on-and off-track, was wound up to fever pitch.

Behind the scenes, intrigues fermented between team personnel, sponsors and component suppliers. Johnny Tipler interviewed many of the people involved in F1 at the time and with Team Lotus in particular, and without exception they were keen to discuss Senna’s tenure of the prime seat at the Norfolk team, where the young Brazilian was warmly regarded and his talents held in high esteem. The book draws on this wide variety of first-hand sources to describe the atmosphere and politics within the organisation, as well as examining the cars Senna and his three successive team-mates, de Angelis, Dumfries and Nakajima drove, from Types 97T to 99T, with reference to their technical evolution.

The chronological theme includes chapters detailing Team Lotus's performance in each Grand Prix, interspersed with chapters penetrating the underlying themes – mechanical and political, including the mood at Ketteringham Hall in the season prior to Senna’s arrival when Mansell was at loggerheads with team manager Peter Warr. The book pulls no punches in its final summation of the effect that Senna had on the once glorious Norfolk squad.

Although the time that Senna spent at Lotus marked the team’s final flowering as a Grand Prix winning outfit, it has been largely overlooked. Given better reliability, he could easily have become World Champion with Lotus and Johnny Tipler’s detailed investigation redresses the balance, providing a comprehensive record of this short but fascinating era. It brings to light the state of affairs within Team Lotus during the post-Chapman period, and more fundamentally it demonstrates the level of excitement and commitment that Senna aroused. For a grief-wracked team following the death of its founder, Senna’s transitory reign was its heroic last stand.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

1902351169

ISBN 10:

1902351169

ISBN 13:

Published:

2005

Dimensions:

275x275mm

Pages:

224

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour ill

Barcode:

9781902351162

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b11115b_ayrton_senna_team_lotus_years__86664.1339460360.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772086272
jim-clark-and-his-most-successful-lotus-signed-by-eoin-young-2
Jim Clark And His Most Successful Lotus (Signed by Eoin Young)

Signed by Author, Eoin Young, 2nd hand book in excellent condition

In 1963 Jim Clark set records with a slim green Formula 1 Lotus-Climax that have never been bettered. He won seven of that season's ten Grands Prix and took the World Championship. And he won all those 1963 races in one chassis - the monocoque Lotus 25 R4. In this fascinating study of a golden era, Eoin Young draws on a number of original interviews with Jim Clark and Colin Chapman to describe both the remarkable relationship between these two men, as legendary driver and brilliant designer/team boss, and also the perfect union between Clark and R4. There are insights too from key team personnel including Lotus chief mechanic, Dick Scammell, and Clark's mechanic, Allan McCall, and recollections from the doyen of motor racing writers, Denis Jenkinson, who wrote that 'the combination of Clark and Lotus-Climax are such that it is a joy to watch - a perfect performance'. The book celebrates this perfection, the well-researched text being supported by a wealth of period photographs, including a variety of fabulous colour images. Young then follows the story of R4 as it is sold on down the food chain. In 1964 it was bought by the Parnell team, fitted with a BRM V8 engine and raced by various drivers including Mike Hailwood, Innes Ireland, Piers Courage, Richard Attwood and Chris Amon.
When R4 was pensioned-off from Formula 1, it was bought by Peter Yock in New Zealand, then sold on to Peter Hughes, who fitted a Daimler V8 and eventually a Ford twin-cam I .5-litre engine, for campaigning locally. It seemed that the Lotus might end its days in a scrapyard - until John Dawson-Damer stepped in. This British ex-pat engineer, living in Australia, had a collection of Fl Lotuses and, when he heard that the remains of R4 might be for sale, the hunt was on. He found the monocoque in the customs pound in Sydney, awaiting auction to cover unpaid duties, and the remains of the car were rusting in an Auckland garage. When he lost his life in an accident at the Modena Autodrome on 14 March 1957 driving a Formula One car of the Prancing Horse stable, sports fans cried not only for their late champion but also — and above all — for the man himself. A style developed on every-day roads, where he acquired a special sensitivity with which to compete in the great races of the day: the Mille Miglia, the Targa Florio, the Coppa d'Oro delle Dolomiti as well as the races that comprised the world sports car championship. The 1956 Mille Miglia was memorable, a race dominated by Castellotti from start to finish, in which he drove in torrential rain for 11 hours at an average of 85.40 mph, inflicting on his opponents a huge lead. After he had crossed the finish line at Brescia, his Ferrari number 548 was in immaculate condition, without a scratch. It was this victory that established him as a champion and earned him the esteem and sincere friendship of Juan Manuel Fangio. Born in the 1880s, he experienced and was involved in the earliest days of motoring and motorcycling before going off to the First World War in 1914. It was here that Peter made his indelible mark in auto racing—as the designer of the most successful American-built race cars during the heyday of the Canadian-American Challenge Cup. His cars broke new ground in the use of advanced materials such as titanium, as well as emerging ground-effect technologies. It was an amazing achievement for a cockney lad with no formal training in design or engineering. But Peter overcame these limitations through a rare ability to learn by doing and an incredible capacity for hard work. He also retained an irrepressible sense of humor that reveals itself in a lifetime’s worth of anecdotes gathered on and off the racetrack. Whether it was launching rockets at the Lotus shop, dodging French police at the Reims GP, or spending New Year’s eve quarantined with Graham Hill in Pakistan, Peter never lost his boundless enthusiasm or energy.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

CANAMCH

ISBN 10:

1893618862

ISBN 13:

9781893618862

Published:

2007

Dimensions:

220x235mm

Pages:

384

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour and b/w ill

Barcode:

9781893618862

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b13455b_canam_challenger__94117.1339460430.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772087942
piers-courage-last-of-the-gentleman-racers
Piers Courage - Last Of The Gentleman Racers

By: Adam Cooper . 2nd hand book in good condition

Old Etonian Piers Courage was destined for a career in the family brewing business until he caught the motor racing bug. At times, at both Jordan and subsequently at Stewart Grand Prix, this proved an onerous task, but since moving to Ferrari to join Senna's successor, Michael Schumacher, in 2000, Barrichello has risen steadily to establish his own distinct career and a reputation as one of the few men who, on their day, can genuinely challenge and beat the German champion.

Award-winning writer David Tremayne first met Barrichello in 1992 and has been present at every one of his Grand Prix outings, witnessing his moments of promise, such as the European Grand Prix at Donington in his debut season; the moments of despair and near tragedy, such as Imola a year later; and his moments of triumph, not least that dramatic breakthrough victory at Hockenheim in 2000.

In this unofficial biography he probes beneath the outgoing exterior to examine the motivations and philosophy of an emotional, determined and very quick individual whose fundamental character, despite the intense pressures of his job, remains as engaging as it was when he took his first tentative steps in Fl back at a chilly Silverstone late in 1992.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

H4200

ISBN 10:

1844252000

ISBN 13:

Published:

2005

Dimensions:

160x240mm

Pages:

256

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour ill

Barcode:

9781844252008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b196b_runens_barrichello_biography__37868.1339460431.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772087959
a-drive-on-the-wild-side-20-exreme-driving-adventures-from-around-the-world
A Drive On The Wild Side - 20 Exreme Driving Adventures From Around The World

By: Alistair Weaver .

A Daring drive across some of the world's most extreme terrain. Donohue's record as a driver was spectacular: He won national sports-car championships as an amateur, and later, the popular Trans-Am sedan series driving both Chevrolet Camaros and AMC Javelins. Though best known as a road racer, his versatility also made him competitive on ovals, with his most famous victory coming at the Indianapolis 50o in 1972. A year later he won the Canadian- American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) title at the wheel of the iconic Porsche 917-3o, as well as the inaugural International Race of Champions (IROC) in early 1974. And in an era of rapid technological change and ever-increasing competition, Donohue also became widely recognized for his ability to apply what he experienced on the track to the testing and preparation of each car he drove. While this partly reflected his formal training in engineering at Brown University, a naturally analytical mind and a relentless work ethic instilled by his family were even more important. This unique package of on- and off-track skills allowed Donohue to make the most of cars with inherent disadvantages, such as AMC's Trans-Am Javelin. We meet many of those central to the sport, past and present, re-live classic races, and gain a privileged insight into the characters and motivations of many of the great drivers, from Juan Manuel Fangio to Mika Hakkinen, Ayrton Senna to Michael Schumacher.

Nigel Roebuck's authoritative and varied perspectives on the sport combine to provide a rare treat from one of Formula 1's most respected observers, whose material seldom appears in book form.

Other Details

Publisher Code:

H604

ISBN 10:

1859606040

ISBN 13:

9781859606049

Published:

1999

Dimensions:

160x240mm

Pages:

304

Illustrations:

Hard Bound, Colour and b/w ill

Barcode:

9781859606049

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b13816b_chasing_the_title__72076.1339460433.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772087987
peter-collins-all-about-the-boy-signed-by-the-author
Peter Collins - All About The Boy! He, Stirling Moss and Mike Hawthorn epitomized the ideal adventuresome racing driver of the post-war period.

They were all distinctly different characters. Moss was the consummate professional, very serious about his motor racing. Hawthorn was an ebullient and sometimes raucous personality. Peter Collins was, perhaps, the slightly more enigmatic of the trio. Like the other two, he had a strong willed father, and a lot of energy went into being his own person. He found motor cars and motor racing early in life, and threw himself into competition at age 17. On the outside was a seemingly carefree, happy-go-lucky young man, and inside, a fiercely competitive racing driver trying to get out.

Collins' attitude and boyish good looks had many referring to him as 'the boy', a nickname that rather stuck. He had three hard and fruitful years in 500c.c. racing, learning his trade in the same cut and thrust arena with Stirling Moss. Then, with very little warning, he decided to enter a Spanish national team in the bobsled events at the 1956 Winter Olympics, and the Spanish novices nearly won. In May 1957, at the age of 28, he started the world's toughest road race, the Italian Mille Miglia. The race ended in a terrible crash which took the life of Portago, his co-driver and many spectators. This crash helped to end road racing altogether. He had scarcely started racing when he was besieged by Formula 1 team owners eager to sign him up. Karl Ludvigsen entertainingly depicts Stewart's career in Lotus, BRM, Matra, March and Tyrrell cars, as well as his Can-Am races in Lolas and Chaparrals, and his cliffhanging near-win in the 1966 Indianapolis 500-mile race. He also chronicles Stewart's long-running campaign for greater safety in motor racing, which met with considerable resistance in a sport in which at that time death was almost routine.

This hook — in series with Ludvigsen's highly-acclaimed Stirling Moss: Racing with the Maestro — is magnificently illustrated with images from the Ludvigsen Library, including the work of Max Le Grand, Stanley Rosenthall, Graham Gauld, Jesse Alexander, Bernard Cahier and Michael Cooper. Its richly- wrought panorama of more than 200 monochrome and colour images invites the reader into Jackie Stewart's world from the 1960s to the present day.
