By any standards, it was the first of the "homologation specials" - a type made progressively stronger, faster, more versatile, and more suitable for the world's toughest International rallies. Though the motorsport foundations had been laid by the Healey Motor Co. Ltd, the work needed to turn these cars into rock-sold 210bhp projectiles was almost all completed by the world-famous "works" BMC Competitions Department at Abingdon. It was because of their vast experience that the "Big Healeys" as they were always affectionately known - became fast and tough, nimble yet durable, so that they were capable of winning major events wherever traction could be assured. Not only did the "works" Austin Healeys win some of the world's most famous events - including Liege-Sofia-Liege, Spa-Sofia-Liege and the French and Austrian Alpine rallies, but they were also supremely fast on events like the Tulip, and came so close, so often, to winning their home event, the British RAC Rally, which traditionally ended the season. Not only did these cars turn their drivers - Pat Moss, Donald Morley, Rauno Aaltonen, Timo Makinen and Paddy Hopkirk among them - into heroes, but individual cars seemed to take on a character and reputation of their own. This book lists each and every success, each and every notable car, and traces exactly how the machinery developed, and improved, from one season to the next. Over time, the "works" cars not only adopted aluminium cylinder heads and body panels, much-modified chassis, transmission and exhaust systems, but they also became supremely strong and could withstand a true battering on the world's toughest events. This book relates how the cars were improved by the engineers, how the drivers came to love their heavy and sometimes self-willed steeds, and how the management team got the most out of everything - machinery, personnel, drivers, and regulations. . Heavily illustrated and packed with technical detail this book will make a welcome addition to any motorsport fans library.

In nine eventful years – 1957 to 1965 – the six-cylinder-engined Austin Healey evolved into a formidable and increasingly specialised rally car. It was there that Healey showed his new car, the Healey 100, which so appealed to Sir Leonard Lord, the head of BMC, that before the show was over the two men entered into an agreement by which BMC would produce the car in volume. The Austin-Healey was born and the rest is history.

That history was made to a significant extent by the motor-sporting achievements of the car. At the end of 1954 a high-performance version of the 100 — the 100S — was launched and it immediately made its mark in circuit racing and in the record books. When the six- cylinder version of the car — the 100-6 — was introduced the success continued.

But it was the 3000 — the next development of the six-cylinder Healey — that really put the car on the motor-sport map with its participation in rallies. Operated by the BMC Competitions Department at Abingdon, the 3000 rally cars achieved numerous successes between 1960 and 1964 at the hands of Pat Moss, the Morley brothers and Timo Makinen, among others.

Production of the 3000 ended in 1968, but this would not quite be the end of the story. The Healey SR/XR37 raced at Le Mans three times and the Jensen Healey was built in collaboration with the Healey company in the early 1970s.

This book tells the story of the big Healeys and the Jensen Healey in race and rally, both when the cars were new and as part of the historic scene. It includes detailed information on specific vehicles, with little-known cars raced by clubmen at one end of the scale and famous works record and rally cars at the other. The new models were hard to distinguish from their forebears by a cursory visual examination, but they incorporated one very significant improvement.

This was a big-bore 2912cc version of the BMC six-cylinder engine. Not only was this more powerful than its 2638cc predecessor, but it was also more torquey. The result was that the Healey 3000 was faster through the gears and had a higher top speed than all of its standard-production forebears. In 1962, the triple-carburettor Mk. II version appeared, offering even more power but no real performance improvements from an engine that proved difficult to keep in tune. So the Mk. II convertible - with a proper soft top and 2+2 seating - reverted to twin carburettors, and the final Mk.III models introduced in 1964 looked to other means for their power increase. In their final years, the works Healeys became respected rally machines.

The 3000, durable as it was, could not last forever: production came to an end late in 1967, largely because of the cost of modifying the car to meet safety and exhaust emissions regulations due to be introduced in the USA during 1968. A big Healey still has undeniable charisma, and these classic British sports cars of the 1960s are today much prized by enthusiasts all over the world. This book chronicles each model and focuses on how and where it was used and received, and is illustrated with rare archive material and stunning new colour photography which will be appreciated by enthusiasts and restorers alike.

Focuses from the end of WWII right up to the introduction of the badge-engineered BMC vehicles

Austin was the only manufacturer to build everything from small family cars to large luxury limousines; taxicabs and military vehicles; sports cars and trucks

Includes details of how, when and where each model was used

Big focus on export markets examining how well Austin fared in each

Includes rare archive material with new colour action photography

Other Details

Publisher Code:

LASREAU

ISBN 10:

ISBN 13:

9781845841935

Published:

2009

Dimensions:

207x190mm

Pages:

96

Illustrations:

Soft Bound, Colour and b/w ill

Barcode:

9781845841935

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/b11953b_last_real_austins__36363.1339460356.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772086148
austin-healey
Austin-Healey

By: Graham Robson .

Born in 1952, the Austin-Healey 100 soon took the UK and US markets by storm. This came as a 2+2 seater, joined in 1958 by a two-seat version. Both were replaced by the more powerful 3000 model in 1959, again offered as a two-seater or 2+2, and available with disc brakes. The Mk II 3000, launched in 1961, could be had either as a 132bhp two-seater with triple carburettors and side screens, which only sold in small numbers, or as the less spartan 2+2 convertible with wind-up windows, and the final version was the 2+2- only 1964 Mk III, now with 150bhp, a wood-veneered dash and better appointments.
All these "Big Healeys" are as much admired and sought-after today as when they were new, offering a splendid mix of looks and performance as well as the traditional sports car attributes of open-air motoring and a gutsy exhaust note. Clarke

In much the same manner as Henry Ford's Model T had earlier helped to put America on wheels, Herbert Austin's diminutive Seven was intended to bring motoring within the reach of everyone in Britain. Both of these historic cars have their own individual design and engineering idiosyncrasies but they are rightly regarded with great affection by countless enthusiasts around the world. The Austin Motor Company was established at Longbridge, Birmingham, in 1906 and during the period leading up to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 produced a number of unremarkable, but reliable cars. The factory expanded at an amazing rate in World War One, producing massive amounts of munitions and military equipment as the workforce increased almost tenfold. Like so many other industrialists of the period, by 1918 Herbert Austin had become an incredibly wealthy person due to lucrative wartime contracts.

Embracing the concept of mass production in order to keep the vast Longbridge plant viable, so in 1919 Austin introduced a slightly revamped version of the pre-war Twenty model. However, the Twenty was too expensive to sell in the quantities needed to keep the company profitable and by 1921 the business was in the hands of the receivers. Following a restructuring, Herbert Austin regained control and brought out the smaller Twelve in 1922. This was a very successful car which remained in production until 1935. Despite the good sales achieved by the Twelve, Austin decided that a cheaper, even more compact model was required. The task of designing this new car was given to eighteen-year-old Stanley Edge, a draughtsman who worked on the project at Herbert Austin's country house in order to avoid prying eyes at the factory. It was Edge who insisted on using a four-cylinder engine and he was responsible for creating the original quirky little open tourer which became universally known as the Austin Chummy.

By the spring of 1923 the engine capacity had been increased to 747cc (from 696cc) and it would stay the same size until production of the Seven came to an end in 1939. In the intervening years the specification evolved gradually as a variety of upgrades were incorporated to enhance the Seven's serviceability and performance. Body styles also proliferated, with various sports models and special saloons offered by a number of coachbuilders. From the outset the tiny Austin competed in races and rallies, winning awards for many years and overcoming the oft-quoted handicaps of its "unpredictable road holding and indescribable brakes" with aplomb. As a result of all this the Seven became a very fashionable car in the 1920s. The top-seller in its class, Herbert Austin's baby killed off practically every one of the cyclecars and lightweight models offered by rival manufacturers.

Improvements to the Seven range continued throughout the 30s, with the introduction of a long wheelbase version and the arrival of the Ulster and Ruby models among the high points. The slightly larger Austin Ten made its debut in 1932 and, although noted more for its ruggedness than its rapidity, this model instantly became another chart-topper for the company. More rounder styling appeared across the board in 1937, but World War Two halted civilian car production and marked the end for both the Seven and the Ten.

Tony Beadle

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0814/8297/3404/files/9781855208803__06666.1454564000.1280.1280.jpg?v=1772095882
metro-mark-steward
Metro (Mark Steward)

Author: Mark Steward, Softbound, 128 Pages, ISBN: 9781855321809, 1st Edition, 1991 - Second Hand book in good order !

FOREWORD By Fred Coultas and Tony Pond

Being born and bred within sight of the mighty Austin factory and having a strong engineering interest, it was almost inevitable that 1 should seek my fortune at Austin, the birthplace of many British thoroughbreds.

In the late 1950s I joined the engineering ranks, under the legendary lssigonis, during the latter years of Mini development. Sales for both models have exceeded 330,000, firmly establishing the tradition that sporting motoring does not have to be expensive. Both designs were the work of Alec Issigonis and featured transverse engines with the gearbox in the sump, driving the front wheels, groundbreaking technology at the time which has been universally adopted since, though not the gearbox in the sump. A further revolution was the suspension; the Mini had progressive springing by rubber cones, the work of rubber technician Dr. Alex Moulton which, together with rack-and-pinion steering, was responsible for the Mini’s incredible road-holding. The larger Morris/Austin 1100 series cars were fitted with a developed version named “Hydrolastic”. Suspension was still by Dr. Moulton’s rubber cones, but associated with a chamber filled with water and antifreeze and incorporating damper valves, which was connected to similar rear units via pipes and was a form of self-levelling.
