ABOUT FINDING THE CORVETTE:
John always insisted, quite rightly, that he wanted a 1969 427 Convertible 4-Speed. Unfortunately this was the summer of 1989 when classic car prices had never been higher, and this particular combination was most people's idea of the ultimate third generation Corvette.
I had been looking everywhere for this car, and having been at the summer Carlisle Swap meet since the Wednesday, had already missed two examples. Waking early Saturday
morning from my sleeping bag in the back of a friend's Chevrolet pick-up truck, I was wandering towards the rest-room block with soap, towel and shaver, when in the distance I saw a shabby Big Block convertible with its characteristic bulging hood driving towards the car sales area. I ran all the way and caught the owner as he arrived at his allotted spot on the Hill.
What he must have thought as an unshaven breathless limey, carrying shaving gear, asked that he open the hood, I know not, but he complied with the request. I checked the cast and stamped engine numbers, asked his price, offered a little less, shook hands in agreement and left $20 and my Gillette as deposit.
We raised the money to pay the balance and spent the rest of that hot Pennsylvania weekend refusing higher offers on the car!
