ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The idea of compiling this book started about three years ago when I met Lou Bates and a number of his colleagues from the Oxford Section of the Bristol Owners Club at one of the classic car shows. They were most helpful, and made many useful and positive suggestions and there, much to my shame, the matter was left.

The following year the Oxford Section were again on duty at the show and they courteously put forward further constructive ideas, and again I failed to act.
Yes, you guessed it — there they were, another year later, at their well-laid-out stand, still eager and full of encouragement. The quest for suitable material started that night as I did not wish to face them again empty-handed.

Our searches turned up a great many articles and as L.J.K. Setright's excellent book on Bristols had unfortunately gone out of print some years earlier, we felt that we should include as much information as possible on the marque. And so came about the first Gold Portfolio — which is out way of saying a 'Bumper Brooklands Book'!

As always we are indebted to the management of the world's leading automotive journals for generously allowing us to include their road tests and other informative stories which are, of course, copyright. Our thanks in this instance go to the publishers of Australian Motor Manual, Autocar, Autosport, Car and Driver, Car Life, Cars Illustrated, Motor, Motor Sport, Motor Trend, Road & Track, Sports Cars Illustrated, Sports Car World, Thoroughbred and Classic Cars, Wheels and the World Car Catalogue for their continued support.

Our thanks also go to the Bristol Owners Club*, not only for their encouragement and advice but also for supplying our cover illustration and the short history of Bristol and Arnolt cars which opens our story.
